1. Saint Paul nous dit que le sang du Christ nous justifie. Que faut-il entendre par « justifier » ?

2. Je propose deux sens.

3. Le premier renvoie à un état de fait objectif, et la justice s'entend alors comme « justesse », plus que comme « justice pénale ». L'état de fait, c'est que notre monde est un monde tordu, faussé, désaxé, et il s'agit de le rendre droit, de le rectifier, de le réaligner sur son axe. La justification s'entend alors comme un réajustement, une rectification de l'ordre naturel des choses.

4. Le second sens prend une dimension plus subjective, en mettant l'accent sur la culpabilité du monde envers Dieu, et la justice s'entend ici comme « justice pénale ». La justification s'entend alors comme le retour à l'obéissance de l'être humain qui s'en était rendu incapable.

1. La justice entendue comme « justesse ».

5. D'après la Bible, le monde actuel est désajusté par rapport au plan initial de Dieu. L'acte de désobéissance originelle d'Adam et Ève a faussé l'être humain qui n'est plus spontanément accordé à la volonté de Dieu, divisé qu'il est entre l'attirance pour le bien et celle pour le mal.

6. Être justifié signifie alors être réaccordé, réajusté à la volonté de Dieu. Si Jésus et Marie pouvaient prononcer un « Oui » entier sans réserve, ce n'est pas notre cas à nous dont le « Oui » est toujours un peu mêlé de « Non ».

7. " Que ta volonté soit faite"… "Oui, mais non, pas tout de suite et pas sur tout ".

8. Nous avons un travail à faire, le travail de nous réorienter toujours plus vers Dieu, tel le tournesol qui s'oriente vers le soleil pour bénéficier de sa lumière, de son énergie.

9. Et un cercle vertueux se met en place. Plus nous sommes ajustés à Dieu et plus il infuse en nous son amour, amour qui nous ajuste toujours plus à lui.

10. Ce cercle n'est pas automatique, il dépend de Dieu et de nous.

11. À certains moments, nous pouvons craindre d'être entraînés trop loin et nous disons : « Stop, jusqu'ici et pas plus loin ». Peut-être s'agit-il de consolider ce que nous avons reçu de Dieu et aussi de faire le point avant d'aller plus loin.

12. Sans aucun doute, l'Esprit Saint lui-même a alors concouru à cette décision de marquer une pause.

2. La justice entendue comme justice pénale.

13. Jusqu'à récemment, dans "justifier", on voyait l'idée d'une injustice faite à Dieu, injustice qui demandait réparation et qui, tant qu'elle n'était pas réparée, suscitait la colère d'un Dieu offensé.

14. Jésus a réparé cette injustice en versant son sang, libérant ainsi la multitude de sa culpabilité. La multitude redevenait ainsi juste, bien sûr dans la mesure où elle avait foi en la puissance régénératrice, salvifique du sacrifice de Jésus-Christ sur la croix.

15. Alors de quelle injustice s'agit-il ?

16. Je dirais que c'est celle de l'humanité quand elle refuse de servir Dieu et qu'elle veut devenir Dieu à sa place. Au lieu de gérer la maison commune, c'est-à-dire la Terre, elle satisfait sa soif de posséder, de jouir, en exploitant, en maltraitant les autres serviteurs, qu'ils soient humains ou non humains. Je pense aux animaux, à la végétation, bien sûr, à la terre, à l'air, à l'eau.

17. L'humanité suit ainsi Adam et Ève dans leur refus de servir Dieu, dans leur tentative de devenir Dieu à la place de Dieu, sans lui et contre lui. Désobéissance fondamentale qui est aussi une injustice fondamentale, car là où Dieu manifestait de la gratuité, de la confiance, de l'amour, en les créant d'abord et ensuite en leur confiant la gestion de la création, Adam et Ève n'y ont vu que du calcul, de la méfiance et une intention mauvaise.

18. Dans la conception maintenant ancienne dont je viens de parler, on disait que le premier couple, et l'humanité avec eux, avaient offensé Dieu, et comme l'offense à un être infini suppose une réparation infinie, il a fallu qu'un être infini, Dieu le Fils, s'offre en sacrifice expiatoire pour arrêter la colère de son Père.

19. Notre époque, frottée de psychologie, ne peut entendre cette rationalisation de l'événement de Jésus-Christ, et j'en suis bien d'accord avec elle.

20. Cela dit, je pense que la conception ancienne contenait une part de vérité. Elle nous rappelle, de manière certes critiquable, que nous sommes en dette vis-à-vis de Dieu, une dette que nous ne pourrons jamais rembourser, et que d'ailleurs nous n'avons pas à rembourser [1].

21. Je partirai de l'analogie avec une famille. L'enfant naît par la grâce de ses parents, sans aucun mérite de sa part. Il contracte ainsi une dette de vie impossible à rembourser.

22. Et de fait, il n'est pas question pour l'enfant de rembourser quoi que ce soit, mais il est question pour lui de répondre à l'amour de ses parents par son amour à lui, envers ses parents.

23. En grandissant, l'enfant aura de nombreuses occasions de tester l'amour de ses parents par ses calculs mesquins, ses revendications déplacées, ses caprices égoïstes, creusant ainsi, s'il est possible, encore plus sa dette envers eux.

24. Mais qu'il devienne un homme de bien, une femme de bien, et il fera la fierté et la joie de ses parents. Et cela leur fera oublier les sacrifices et les souffrances qu'il leur a coûtés.

25. De manière analogue, nous avons à rendre grâce à Dieu, Lui qui nous a suscités à partir de rien, sans aucun calcul de sa part, gratuitement.

26. À nous de le louer et de le servir en cultivant les graines de vie, de beauté, de bonté qu'il a déposées dans sa création, pour qu'il puisse s'exclamer, à nouveau et à chaque instant : « C'est beau ! C'est bon ! Et même très beau ! Très bon ! Merci, les enfants. »

27. Nous avons creusé notre dette de vie initiale envers Dieu, par notre refus de le louer, de le servir, et plus fondamentalement, de l'aimer, de tout notre être, de tout notre cœur, de toute notre force, de toute notre intelligence.

28. Mais Dieu, à nouveau, nous a fait grâce de la vie, une vie gagnée cette fois non plus sur le néant, mais sur la mort et sur le péché.

29. Et cela lui a coûté l'envoi de son Fils dans le monde. Mais quelle joie au ciel pour un homme, une femme, arrivés à la sainteté, quelle joie quand la famille céleste s'agrandit !

Conclusion.

30. Il y a deux sens pour le mot « justifier » qui ne s'opposent pas, mais se complètent, « justesse » et « justice pénale ». Les deux sens s'unissent pour dire que, fondamentalement, l'homme n'est plus juste, n'est pas juste, mais qu'il doit être justifié, ""fait juste" littéralement. (de même, d'ailleurs, que l'homme n'est pas libre, mais qu'il doit être libéré).

31. Et qu'un seul a réalisé cette justification pour l'humanité, mais aussi pour la création tout entière : le Verbe fait chair, le Christ Jésus dans sa Passion et sa Résurrection.

Reflections on justification

1. Saint Paul tells us that the blood of Christ justifies us. What is meant by ‘justify' ?

2. I propose two meanings.

3. The first refers to an objective state of affairs, and justice is then understood as ‘rightness', rather than as ‘criminal justice'. The state of affairs is that our world is a twisted, distorted, unbalanced world, and the aim is to set it right, to rectify it, to realign it on its axis. Justification is then understood as a readjustment, a rectification of the natural order of things.

4. The second meaning takes on a more subjective dimension, emphasising the world's guilt towards God, and justice is understood here as ‘criminal justice'. Justification is then understood as the return to obedience of the human being who had rendered themselves incapable of it.

Justice as rightness.

5. According to the Bible, the present world is out of alignment with God's original plan. Adam and Eve's original act of disobedience distorted human beings, who are no longer spontaneously attuned to the will of God, being torn as they are between the attraction to good and that to evil.

6. To be justified therefore means to be realigned, readjusted to the will of God. Whilst Jesus and Mary were able to utter a wholehearted ‘Yes' without reservation, this is not the case for us, whose ‘Yes' is always tinged with a touch of ‘No'.

7. “Thy will be done”… “Yes, but no, not just yet and not in every respect”.

8. We have work to do : the work to turn ever more towards God, just like the sunflower that turns towards the sun to draw on its light and energy.

9. And a virtuous circle begins to take shape. The more we are attuned to God, the more he pours his love into us, a love that atunes us ever more to him.

10. Yet this cycle is not automatic ; it depends on God and on us.

11. At times, we may fear being drawn too far and say : “Stop, this far and no further”. Perhaps it is a matter of consolidating what we have received from God and also of taking stock before going any further.

12. Undoubtedly, the Holy Spirit himself then contributed to this decision to take a break.

Let us move on to the second meaning, justice understood as criminal justice.

Justice as criminal justice

13. Until recently, the word ‘justify' was seen to convey the idea of an injustice done to God, an injustice that demanded redress and which, as long as it remained unredressed, aroused the wrath of an offended God.

14. Jesus redressed this injustice by shedding his blood, thereby freeing the multitude from their guilt. The multitude thus became righteous once more, of course to the extent that they had faith in the regenerative, saving power of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross.

15. So what injustice are we talking about ?

16. I would say it is that of humanity when it refuses to serve God and wants to become God in his place. Instead of managing our common home, that is to say, the Earth, it satisfies its desire to possess and enjoy by exploiting and mistreating the other servants, whether human or non-human. I am thinking of animals, of vegetation, of course, of the earth, of the air, of water.

17. Humanity thus follows Adam and Eve in their refusal to serve God, in their attempt to become God in God's stead, without him and against him. A fundamental disobedience which is also a fundamental injustice, for where God showed generosity, trust and love, first by creating them and then by entrusting them with the stewardship of creation, Adam and Eve saw in it only calculation, mistrust and evil intent.

So in the now-ancient conception I have just mentioned, it was said that the first couple, and humanity with them, had offended God, and since an offence against an infinite being implies infinite reparation, it was necessary for an infinite being, God the Son, to offer himself as a sacrifice of atonement to appease the wrath of his Father.

19. So our age, steeped in psychology, cannot accept this rationalisation of the story of Jesus Christ, and I fully agree with that.

20. That said, I think the old conception contained a grain of truth. It reminds us, albeit in a way that is certainly open to criticism, that we are in debt to God, a debt we can never repay, and which, moreover, we are not required to repay [2].

21. I shall start with the analogy of a family. A child is born through the grace of their parents, through no merit of their own. They thus incur a debt of life that is impossible to repay.

22. And indeed, there is no question of the child repaying anything at all, but rather of him responding to his parents' love with his own love for their parents.

23. As the child grows up, he will have many opportunities to test his parents' love through his petty calculations,his misplaced demands, his selfish whims, thereby deepening, if that is possible, his debt to them even further.

24. But if he becomes a good man, a good woman, he will be the pride and joy of his parents. And this will make them forget the sacrifices and the suffering he has cost them.

25. In a similar way, we must give thanks to God, He who brought us into being from nothing, without any calculation on His part, freely.

26. It is up to us to praise and serve Him by nurturing the seeds of life, beauty and goodness that He has placed within His creation, so that He may exclaim, again and at every moment : ‘It is beautiful ! It is good ! And indeed very beautiful ! Very good ! Thank you, children.'

27. We have deepened our original debt of life to God, through our refusal to praise Him, to serve Him, and more fundamentally, to love Him with all our being, with all our heart, with all our strength, with all our mind.

28. But God, once again, has granted us the gift of life, a life won this time not from nothingness, but from death and sin.

29. And this cost Him the sending of His Son into the world. But what joy in heaven for a man, a woman, who have attained holiness, what joy when the heavenly family grows !

I shall conclude.

Conclusion

30. There are two meanings for the word ‘justify' which are not opposite, but complementary : ‘rightness' and ‘criminal justice'. The two meanings come together to say that, fundamentally, man is no longer just is not just but that he must be justified, literally ‘made just' (Just as, indeed, man is not free, but must be freed).

31. And that one alone has brought about this justification for humanity, but also for the whole of creation : the Word made flesh, Christ Jesus in his Passion and Resurrection.

31 Voyant ce qui venait de se passer, ses compagnons furent profondément attristés et ils allèrent informer leur maître de tout ce qui était arrivé. 32 Alors, le faisant venir, son maître lui dit : ‹Mauvais serviteur, je t'avais remis toute cette dette, parce que tu m'en avais supplié. 33 Ne devais-tu pas, toi aussi, avoir pitié de ton compagnon, comme moi-même j'avais eu pitié de toi ?› 34 Et, dans sa colère, son maître le livra aux tortionnaires, en attendant qu'il eût remboursé tout ce qu'il lui devait.

35 C'est ainsi que mon Père céleste vous traitera, si chacun de vous ne pardonne pas à son frère du fond du cœur. »

Chers frères et sœurs [1], sachez-le, Dieu vous a doté d'une chose qui vous rend infiniment précieux : votre âme. Elle est plus précieuse que le plus précieux des diamants, et elle est faite pour resplendir plus qu'aucune étoile de ce monde quand la lumière de Dieu la traversera.	Dear brothers and sisters [2], know this : God has endowed you with something that makes you infinitely precious : your soul. It is more precious than the most precious of diamonds, and it is made to shine brighter than any star in this world when the light of God will shine through it.	親愛なる兄弟姉妹の皆さん [3]、どうかこのことを心に留めてください。神は、皆さんを無限に尊い存在とするものを授けてくださいました。それは、皆さんの「魂」です。それは、最も高価なダイヤモンドよりも尊く、神の光がそこを照らすとき、この世のどの星よりも明るく輝くように造られているのです。
Aussi devons-nous faire attention à notre âme : éviter les vices qui voilent son éclat et au contraire chercher les vertus qui le rehaussent. Et pour cela, nous avons le bon berger dont le sang nous lave de nos péchés.	We must therefore take care of our soul : avoiding the vices that dim its radiance and, on the contrary, seeking the virtues that enhance it. Gardons-nous de remettre notre âme dans d'autres mains que les siennes, et en particulier dans celles des prédateurs. Comme ils ne connaissent pas le mot de passe connu de Dieu seul, ils cherchent à passer par des entrées dérobées ou alors ils tentent de se faire ouvrir la porte par des subterfuges. À nous de leur faire échec avec l'Esprit de sagesse et de conseil reçu du Seigneur.	Let us guard against placing our soul in hands other than His, and in particular in those of predators. As they do not know the password known only to God, they seek to enter through hidden passages or else attempt to have the door opened to them through subterfuge. It is up to us to thwart them with the Spirit of wisdom and counsel received from the Lord.	私たちの魂を、主以外の者、とりわけ捕食者の手に委ねないよう警戒しましょう。彼らは神のみが知る合言葉を理解していないため、隠れた通路から侵入しようとしたり、あるいは策略を用いて扉を開けさせようと試みます。主から授かった知恵と助言の御霊によって、彼らを退けるのは私たち次第です。
La voix derrière la porte me trouble, ses propos provoquent de la peur, de l'énervement, ou bien elle déclenche en moi des alternances d'exaltation et de dépression ? C'est mauvais signe.	Does the voice behind the door unsettle me ; do its words provoke fear or irritation, or does it trigger in me alternating feelings of elation and depression ? That is a bad sign.	扉の向こうからの声が私を不安にさせるか。その言葉は恐怖や苛立ちを誘うか、あるいは高揚と落ち込みが交互に訪れるような感情を引き起こすか。それは悪い兆候である。
Au contraire, la voix pénètre directement dans mon cœur, ce qu'elle dit révèle une profonde et réelle intimité avec moi, elle m'apaise d'une paix qui dure, sans haut ni bas ? C'est bon signe.	On the contrary, does the voice penetrate directly into my heart ; does what it says reveal a deep and real intimacy with me ; does it soothe me with a lasting peace, without highs or lows ? Seul son Créateur peut prononcer les mots qui descendent au lieu le plus intime de sa créature. Au tombeau, Jésus n'a qu'à appeler Marie par son nom pour qu'elle reconnaisse le rabbi qui a les paroles de la vie éternelle, - mieux, Celui est la Parole de Vie éternelle.	Only his Creator can speak the words that reach the innermost part of his creature. At the tomb, Jesus need only call Mary by her name for her to recognise the Rabbi who has the words of eternal life—better still, He is the Word of eternal life.	被造物の最も奥底に届く言葉を語ることができるのは、その創造主だけである。墓の前で、イエスはただマリアを名指しで呼ぶだけで、彼女は永遠のいのちの言葉を持つラビを認めた――それどころか、イエスこそが永遠のいのちの御言葉そのものである。

Chapitre 1. Dieu est le Dieu des vivants et des morts

1. Face aux Saducéens qui ne croyaient pas en la résurrection individuelle, le Christ a répondu que « Dieu n'est pas le Dieu des morts, mais des vivants, car tous sont vivants pour lui. » [1]. Non seulement les vivants mais aussi les morts se tiennent sous le regard de Dieu.

2. La résurrection du Christ concerne les morts comme les vivants dans la mesure où elle constitue Jésus comme juge et seigneur des vivants et des morts [2]. Saint Pierre affirme que la voix du Christ ressuscité a retenti dans le royaume des morts [3]. Pendant l'office des Ténèbres, nous entendons cette page magnifique où Adam, dans le cachot le plus profond de l'Hadès, entend les pas du Christ qui vient le libérer [4].

3. Nous pouvons y trouver une source de réconfort, mais aussi d'angoisse si nous redoutons Dieu : même dans la mort, nous ne pouvons pas échapper à Dieu. Le Psaume 138 reflète cette ambivalence entre réconfort et angoisse :

Où donc aller loin de ton souffle, où m'enfuir loin de ta face ?
Je gravis les cieux, tu es là, je descends chez les morts, te voici.
J'avais dit : les ténèbres m'écrasent, mais la nuit devient lumière autour de moi, - la
nuit de la mort -. Même la ténèbre pour toi n'est pas ténèbre, et la nuit comme le jour est
lumière".

4. La Bible nous dit que nous aurons à rendre compte de ce que nous avons fait quand nous étions vivants lors du Jugement dernier, nous verrons le bien et le mal que nous avons fait et cela déterminera tel ou tel destin, tel ou tel lieu d'assignation.

5. Pour reprendre l'Évangile selon saint Matthieu [5], avons-nous fait miséricorde ? Avons-nous soulagé la misère des pauvres ? Avons-nous prêté attention aux petits, aux prisonniers, aux malades, aux étrangers ?

6. Qu'avons-nous fait des talents que nous avons reçus de nos parents, de notre pays, et plus fondamentalement de Dieu notre Créateur [6] ? Dieu nous demandera : "Qu'as fait de cette vie que je t'ai donnée, des capacités à créer du bien, du beau ? »

7. Nous aurons à rendre des comptes de ce que nous avons fait de notre vie, et cela peut être angoissant : "Mince, j'ai fait n'importe quoi de ma vie, J'ai gaspillé ce que j'avais
reçu et maintenant je dois m'en expliquer".

8. Le Nouveau Testament nous montre ceux admis dans la maison du Père. Ils ont fait confiance à la promesse du Christ, ils ont cru à sa résurrection, ils ont cru qu'elle les libérait de l'enfermement du mal et de la mort. Ils ont bénéficié de la puissance de résurrection du Christ, ils ont obéi à ce que Dieu demande à ses enfants.

9. Il y a le dedans, la maison du Père, et aussi le dehors. Les mauvais serviteurs sont jetés dehors : là,il fait sombre, on pleure et on grince des dents [7]. Là se trouvent un feu qui ne s'éteint pas [8] et un ver qui ne meurt pas [9]. Se trouver dehors, c'est se trouver dans un lieu terrible et cela pour l'éternité.

10. La seconde perspective est terrible, on peut la refuser, mais un fait est sûr : elle est présente dans les Écritures, alors qu'est-ce qu'on en fait ? C'est toute la question : comment tenir ensemble l'affirmation que Dieu est amour, miséricorde, qu'il a envoyé son Fils pour nous sauver, et en même temps affirmer qu'il existe un lieu où l'on est rejeté loin de Lui et où l'on est très mal ?

Première interprétation : Dieu juge.
11. Dans cette première façon de voir, nous nous trouvons dans le temps de la patience de Dieu mais à notre mort, c'en est fini, les jeux sont faits, et nous comparaissons devant un tribunal, avec un juge, des policiers, des témoins, et l'issue du procès, Dieu applique un barème de peines plus ou moins lourdes pour les crimes commis.

12. Cette première vision, classique, se trouve par exemple, dans des scènes du jugement dernier de Fra Angelico où l'on voit les anges danser avec les justes tandis que les démons entraînent de force les condamnés vers le gouffre.

Deuxième interprétation : Je suis mon propre juge.

13. La décision d'aller vers le lieu de la félicité éternelle ou le lieu du malheur éternel n'est pas prononcée par Dieu à l'instar d'un juge extérieur qui fait appliquer des peines en fonction d'un code pénal extérieur, elle se fait pour ainsi dire automatiquement en fonction de l'orientation que nous avons donnée à notre vie en fonction de nos actes.

14. Une maxime française dit : « Comme on fait son lit, on se couche ». Celui qui a mal fait son lit pendant le jour passera une mauvaise nuit : par contre, celui qui a bien fait son lit dormira bien.

15. Par analogie, durant sa vie, celui-ci a ouvert son cœur à la misère du monde, il a essayé d'aider ton prochain, il a essayé de se convertir, il s'est reconnu pécheur mais il a demandé l'aide du Seigneur pour faire le bien. Il a orienté son cœur vers la bonté, vers le pardon, vers l'amour. Alors à sa mort, l'ouverture, grande ou petite, de son cœur est toujours là et Dieu va en profiter pour l'agrandir, et y entrer.

16. Par contre, celui-là s'est fait un cœur fermé, il n'a pensé qu'à lui, il a été indifférent au sort des petits, ou pire, il les a maltraités, exploités. À sa mort, ce cœur qui s'est blindé contre l'amour refusera que Dieu y entre.

17. Ce ne sera pas Dieu qui dira : « "Éloigne-toi de moi", c'est lui-même qui s'éloignera de Dieu parce qu'il n'acceptera pas de se tenir devant Dieu, d'ailleurs il ne le pourra même pas : la ténèbre ne tient pas devant la lumière, le mal ne tient pas devant le bien.

18. Pour le dire avec une autre maxime, "L'arbre tombe du côté où il penche". Si vous penchez vers le bien, vous allez tomber dans la bonté infinie, si vous penchez vers le mal, si vous vous êtes construit une vie orientée vers le mal, à la résurrection, vous tomberez du côté du mal.

19. Le Retable du Jugement dernier de Rogier van der Weyden me semble illustrer cette deuxième interprétation. À la différence des peintures de Fra Angelico, ce ne sont pas les démons qui précipitent les condamnés dans l'enfer, mais les condamnés eux-mêmes qui s'entraînent les uns les autres : on voit ainsi un condamné qui en tire un autre par les cheveux vers le fond.

20. Finalement, l'enfer est peuplé de condamnés qui se haïssent mutuellement, et à la limite, la présence de bourreaux non humains n'est même pas nécessaire : ils se torturent entre eux et leur haine est telle qu'elle s'exerce aussi contre eux-mêmes : un des damnés se mord lui-même la main.

Troisième interprétation : Les injustes ne ressuscitent pas.
21. Dans cette troisième interprétation, minoritaire, Dieu ne ressuscite que les justes. Les injustes retournent au néant, ils n'existent tout simplement plus. Dieu ne ressuscite que ceux qui seront capables d'entrer dans son intimité .

22. Cette vision s'appuie sur quelques versets dans la Bible qui mentionnent la résurrection en la qualifiant de « résurrection des justes » [10]. Dans cette vision, ces versets excluent donc qu'il y ait une résurrection des injustes. Les tenants de cette vision n'acceptent pas l'idée de l'enfer qui est incompatible pour eux avec un Dieu amour : seuls ressuscitent ceux qui iront au paradis.

23. Certains iront plus loin en considérant que tous, justes comme injustes, ressusciteront et iront au paradis ; les anges déchus eux aussi réintégreront la cour de Dieu. Autrement dit, l'enfer n'existe ni pour les êtres humains ni pour les démons d'après les tenants de cette position.

24. De son côté, la Grande Église tient que l'enfer existe, mais, sauf erreur de ma part, elle n'a jamais affirmé que tel ou tel être humain s'y trouvait – des saints ont cependant témoigné qu'ils avaient vu des êtres humains en enfer.

Chapitre 2. Le voyage dans l'au-delà du seigneur Tondale

25. Un manuscrit de 1149 rapporte le voyage dans l'au-delà d'un certain chevalier Tondale [11]

26. Ce chevalier tombe comme mort au cours d'un festin. Il se relève deux ou trois jours plus tard, et raconte que son âme, détachée de son corps, a visité l'au-delà guidée par son ange gardien.

27. Tondale décrit l'au-delà non pas en trois niveaux (enfer, purgatoire et paradis) mais en quatre niveaux.

Le niveau -2 : les totalement mauvais

28. Tondale commence son périple par le lieu le plus bas, le plus terrible, l'enfer inférieur, le lieu des âmes totalement mauvaises. Ces âmes sont tellement mauvaises que leur sort est déjà fixé avant même le Jugement dernier.

29. Tondale décrit les supplices et les personnes qui s'y trouvent, dont des papes et des religieux. Dans l'enfer inférieur, tout concourt au malaise des sens : puanteur, cris et hurlements, fournaise, ciel rouge, terre calcinée, crevassée, peuplée de démons affreux. Quant au maître des lieux, Satan, il a mille bouches pleines de crocs, mille yeux enflammés. Étonnamment, ce roi est enchaîné et lui aussi ne peut donc pas sortir de cet enfer où finalement il souffre comme il fait souffrir avec ses sbires.

Le niveau -1 : les pas totalement mauvais
30. L'âme de Tondale monte ensuite au niveau des morts qui sont mauvais, mais pas totalement. Eux peuvent espérer qu'au jugement dernier, ils échapperont à l'enfer inférieur, et peut-être passeront au niveau supérieur.
Cela dit, ils sont toujours dans un milieu où tous les sens souffrent, comme au niveau inférieur.

31. À ce propos, il me semble que nous sommes plus attirés par les descriptions graphiques de l'enfer que du paradis et je m'en demande la raison ? Pourquoi commence-t-on par la description de l'enfer, et pourquoi cette description dépasse de loin en longueur celle du paradis ? Est-ce par qu'il n'y a rien à dire quand tout va bien, que tout est beau ?

Le niveau +1 : les pas totalement bons
32. Tondale quitte le niveau -1 des pas totalement mauvais pour le niveau +1 des pas totalement bons, niveau symétrique du niveau -1. N'étant pas totalement bons, ils ne peuvent être admis au niveau supérieur pour l'instant.

33. Les âmes sont exposées aux intempéries dans des alcôves le long d'un immense mur mais leurs souffrances sont moindres que dans les niveaux inférieurs. Les cris de douleur et de haine, la puanteur, les spectacles affreux ont disparu ; l'atmosphère est calme, le ciel bleu et s'offre aux yeux une prairie verdoyante.

34. Ce niveau ressemble à ce que sera plus tard le purgatoire. Il s'agit d'un entre-deux, un lieu transitoire avant l'entrée au niveau supérieur du paradis.

Le niveau +2 : les totalement bons
35. Comme au niveau -2, les âmes qui s'y trouvent sont déjà dans leur lieu définitif sans attendre le Jugement dernier.

36. Tondale y rencontre les martyrs, les couples restés fidèles l'un à l'autre .
Voir dans le retable de l'Hospice de Beaune l'homme qui tend la main vers sa femme pour aller avec elle au paradis. C'est l'inverse du condamné vu plus haut qui agrippe une femme pour l'entraîner avec lui en enfer.

S'y trouvent aussi les religieux restés fidèles à leur vœu d'obéissance, de chasteté et de pauvreté.

37. Arrivé à l'entrée d'une tente, Tondale est mis en garde par son ange gardien : « Écoute de l'extérieur la musique, mais n'y entre pas. Sinon, ton âme sera tellement captivée qu'elle s'en trouvera incapable d'en sortir ».

38. Tondale s'exécute. Il entend une musique merveilleuse s'élever de la tente : anges et êtres humains sont unis dans un concert de louange à Dieu, à l'inverse de la cacophonie infernale.

39. Avec du recul, on voit qu'il s'agit d'images, aussi bien pour le paradis que pour l'enfer. De fait, notre condition corporelle nous oblige à passer par l'imagination et les représentations sensorielles dans l'espace et le temps pour rendre compte un tant soit peu de l'au-delà.
Nos représentations sont des approximations d'une réalité autre, sans doute plus merveilleuse et aussi plus terrible.

40. Le Seigneur Tondale a terminé son voyage dans l'au-delà. Son âme réintègre son corps, il se relève à la stupéfaction de tous et mène désormais une vie édifiante en prêchant la conversion à ses pairs : « L'enfer est effroyable, fuyez-le à tout prix ; le paradis est merveilleux, cherchez-le à tout prix ».

Chapitre 3. La vision béatifique de Dieu

41. Pour Thomas d'Aquin, la plus grande jouissance est de voir Dieu, et symétriquement, la plus grande souffrance est non seulement de ne pas le voir, mais aussi de savoir qu'on ne pourra jamais le voir : les injustes et leurs bourreaux, les anges déchus, sont privés – ou se sont privés - pour l'éternité de la vision qui rend totalement et pleinement heureux, la vision de Dieu, ce qu'on appelle la vision béatifique.

42. Symétriquement, les anges restés fidèles à Dieu et les justes savent que le bonheur de voir Dieu ne leur sera pas enlevé, et ils peuvent se reposer en lui sans craindre de le perdre.

43. Peut-être avez-vous fait cette expérience, à certains moments, d'un avant-goût fugitif inspiré par l'Esprit saint de ce qu'est la bonté pure, l'amour pur, sans absolument aucun retour sur soi, un amour absolument donné. Cette intuition nous permet d'avoir une idée de ce qu'est Dieu, de qui est Dieu.

44. Le Christ voyait son Père en permanence et il nous donne d'entrer dans sa vision par sa Passion et sa Résurrection. Pour nous qui sommes des créatures, nous serons transformés à l'image et ressemblance du Fils lors de la vision sans voile de Dieu.

45. Car cette vision est une vision transformante : "Nous serons comme Dieu, parce que nous le verrons tel qu'il est" [12].

46. Autrement dit, nous serons divinisés par la vision de Dieu, et ce sera une joie incroyable au Ciel.

Death and Beyond (2/2)

Chapter 1. God is the God of the living and the dead

1. Faced with the Sadducees, who did not believe in individual resurrection, Christ replied that ‘God is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for all are alive to him.' [13] Not only the living but also the dead stand before God's gaze.

2. The resurrection of Christ concerns the dead as well as the living insofar as it establishes Jesus as judge and lord of the living and the dead [14]. Saint Peter affirms that the voice of the risen Christ resounded in the realm of the dead [15]. During the Tenebrae service, we hear this magnificent passage in which Adam, in the deepest dungeon of Hades, hears the footsteps of Christ coming to set him free [16].

3. We may find in this a source of comfort, but also of anguish if we fear God : even in death, we cannot escape God. Psalm 138 reflects this ambivalence between comfort and anxiety :

Where can I go to escape your breath, where can I flee from your presence ?
I ascend to the heavens, there you are ; I descend to the realm of the dead, there you are.
I said : ‘Darkness overwhelms me, yet the night becomes light around me—the
night of death.' Even darkness is no darkness to you, and the night is as bright as the
day.”

4. The Bible tells us that we will have to give an account of what we did whilst we were alive at the Last Judgement ; we will see the good and the evil we have done, and this will determine our fate and our final destination.

5. To quote theGospel according to Saint Matthew [17], have we shown mercy ? Have we alleviated the misery of the poor ? Have we paid attention to the little ones, the prisoners, the sick, and the strangers ?

6. What have we done with the talents we have received from our parents, from our country, and more fundamentally from God our Creator [18] ? God will ask us : “What have you done with this life I gave you, with the ability to create good and beauty ?”

7. We will have to give an account of what we have done with our lives, and that can be distressing : “Oh dear, I've made a mess of my life, I've squandered what I'd received and now I have to explain myself.”

8. The New Testament shows us those admitted into the Father's house. They trusted in Christ's promise ; they believed in his resurrection ; they believed that it freed them from the bondage of evil and death. They benefited from the power of Christ's resurrection ; they obeyed what God asks of his children.

9. There is the inside, the Father's house, and also the outside. The wicked servants are cast out : there it is dark, and there is weeping and gnashing of teeth [19]. There is a fire there that never goes out [20] and a worm that does not die [21]. To be outside is to be in a terrible place, and that for eternity.

10. The second prospect is terrible ; one may reject it, but one thing is certain : it is present in Scripture, so what are we to make of it ? That is the whole question : how do we reconcile the assertion that God is love and mercy, that he sent his Son to save us, with the simultaneous assertion that there is a place where we are cast far from him and where we suffer terribly ?

First interpretation : God judges.

11. In this first way of looking at it, we find ourselves in the time of God's patience, but upon our death, it is all over ; the die is cast, and we stand before a court, with a judge, police officers, witnesses, and at the end of the trial, God applies a scale of punishments, more or less severe, for the crimes committed.

12. This first, classical vision is found, for example, in Fra Angelico's scenes of the Last Judgement, where we see angels dancing with the righteous whilst demons forcibly drag the damned towards the abyss [22].

Second interpretation : I am my own judge.

13. The decision to go to the place of eternal bliss or the place of eternal misery is not pronounced by God like an external judge who imposes penalties according to an external criminal code ; it is, so to speak, automatic, depending on the direction we have given to our lives through our actions.

14. A French proverb says : ‘As you make your bed, so you must lie in it'. He who has made his bed poorly during the day will have a bad night's sleep ; on the other hand, he who has made his bed well will sleep well.

15. By analogy, during his life, this person opened his heart to the world's suffering ; he tried to help his neighbour ; he tried to turn his life around ; he acknowledged himself a sinner but sought the Lord's help to do good. He turned his heart towards goodness, towards forgiveness, towards love. So at his death, the openness of his heart—whether great or small—is still there, and God will take the opportunity to enlarge it and enter into it.

16. On the other hand, that person has made his heart closed ; he thought only of himself, he was indifferent to the plight of the little ones, or worse, he mistreated and exploited them. At his death, this heart, which has armoured itself against love, will refuse to let God enter.

17. It will not be God who says : “Depart from me” ; it is he himself who will turn away from God because he will not accept standing before God ; indeed, he will not even be able to : darkness cannot stand before the light, evil cannot stand before good.

18. To put it in another maxim, “The tree falls which way it leans.” If you lean towards good, you will fall into infinite goodness ; if you lean towards evil, if you have built a life oriented towards evil, at the resurrection, you will fall on the side of evil.

19. Rogier van der Weyden's Altarpiece of the Last Judgement seems to me to illustrate this second interpretation. Unlike Fra Angelico's paintings, it is not the demons who hurl the damned into hell, but the damned themselves who drag one another down : we thus see one damned soul dragging another by the hair towards the depths.

20. Ultimately, hell is populated by the damned who hate one another, and ultimately, the presence of non-human tormentors is not even necessary : they torture one another, and their hatred is such that it is also directed against themselves : one of the damned bites his own hand.

Third interpretation : The unrighteous do not rise again.

21. In this third, minority interpretation, God raises only the righteous. The unrighteous return to nothingness ; they simply cease to exist forever. God raises only those who will be capable of entering into intimacy with Him.

22. This view is based on a few verses in the Bible which mention the resurrection, describing it as the ‘resurrection of the righteous' [23]. In this view, these verses therefore rule out the resurrection of the unrighteous. Proponents of this view do not accept the idea of hell, which they see as incompatible with a God of love : only those who will go to paradise are resurrected.

23. Some go further, holding that everyone—both the righteous and the unrighteous—will be resurrected and go to paradise ; even the fallen angels will be restored to God's court. In other words, according to the proponents of this position, hell exists neither for human beings nor for demons.

24. For its part, the Great Church maintains that hell exists, but it has never claimed that any particular human being is there, unless I am mistaken – saints will say they have seen human beings in hell, on a personal basis.

Chapter 2. Sir Tondale's Journey to the Afterlife

25. A manuscript from 1149 recounts the journey to the afterlife allegedly undertaken by a certain knight named Tondale [24]

26. This knight falls as if dead during a feast. He rises two or three days later and recounts what happened to him : his soul, detached from his body, visited the afterlife guided by his guardian angel.

27. Tondale describes the afterlife not in three levels (hell, purgatory and paradise, but in four levels.

Level -2 : the entirely wicked

28. Tondale begins his journey in the lowest, most terrible place, the lower hell, the realm of the utterly wicked souls. These souls are so wicked that their fate is already sealed even before the Last Judgement.

29. Tondale describes the torments and the people who are there, including popes and clergy. In the lower hell, everything contributes to the physical agony : stench, screams and howls, a furnace, a red sky, scorched, cracked earth, with hideous demons. As for the master of the place, Satan, he has a thousand mouths full of fangs, a thousand flaming eyes. Surprisingly, this king is chained and so he too cannot leave this hell where, ultimately, he suffers just as he causes others to suffer with his minions.

Level -1 : the not entirely wicked

30. Moving up one level, Tondale's soul arrives at the level of the dead who are evil, but not entirely so. Maybe they can hope that at the Last Judgement, they will escape the lower hell, and perhaps pass to the higher level.
That said, they are still in an environment where all the senses suffer, just as on the lower level.

31. On this point, it seems to me that we are more drawn to graphic descriptions of hell than of paradise, and I wonder what the reason for this is ? Why do we always begin with a description of hell, and why is this description far longer than that of paradise ? Perhaps it is because there is nothing to say when everything is going well, when everything is beautiful ?

Level +1 : the not-entirely-good

32. Tondale leaves level -1 of the not-entirely-wicked for level +1 of the not-entirely-good, the mirror image of level -1. As they are not entirely good, they cannot be admitted to the higher level for the time being.

33. The souls are exposed to the elements in alcoves along an immense wall, but their suffering is less than in the lower levels. The cries of pain and hatred, the stench, the horrific sights have vanished ; the atmosphere is calm, the sky is blue, and a green meadow stretches out before the eyes.

34. This level resembles what purgatory will later become. It is an in-between place, a transitional stage before entering the higher level of paradise.
Level +2 : the wholly good

35. As on level -2, the souls found there are already in their final resting place without waiting for the Last Judgement.

36. Tondale meets the martyrs there, and couples who have remained faithful to one another.
See in the altarpiece of the Hospice de Beaune the man reaching out his hand to his wife to go with her to paradise. This is the opposite of the damned man seen earlier, who grabs a woman to drag her down with him to hell.

There are also the religious who have remained faithful to their vows of obedience, chastity and poverty.

37. Upon reaching the entrance to a tent, Tondale is warned by his guardian angel : ‘Listen to the music from outside, but do not go in. Otherwise, your soul will be so captivated that it will be unable to leave ".

38. Tondale obeys. He hears wonderful music rising from the tent : angels and human beings are united in a concert of praise to God, in contrast to the infernal cacophony.

39. With hindsight, we see that these are images, both for paradise and for hell. Indeed, our physical condition compels us to rely on the imagination and sensory representations in space and time to convey even a glimpse of the afterlife.
Our representations are approximations of another reality, undoubtedly more marvellous and also more terrible.

40. Lord Tondale has completed his journey into the afterlife. His soul returns to his body ; he rises to everyone's amazement and now leads an edifying life, preaching conversion to his peers : ‘Hell is dreadful, flee it at all costs ; paradise is marvellous, seek it at all costs'.

Chapter 3. The beatific vision of God

41. For Thomas Aquinas, the greatest joy is to see God, and conversely, the greatest suffering is not only not to see Him, but also to know that one will never be able to see Him : the unjust and their tormentors, the fallen angels, are deprived – or have deprived themselves – for eternity of the vision that brings total and complete happiness, the vision of God, what is known as the beatific vision.

42. Conversely, the angels who remained faithful to God and the righteous know that the happiness of seeing God will not be taken from them, and they can rest in it without fear of losing it.

43. Perhaps you have had the experience, at certain moments, of a fleeting foretaste, inspired by the Holy Spirit, of what pure goodness is, of pure love, with absolutely no self-interest, a love that is absolutely given. This intuition allows us to have an idea of what God is, of who God is.

44. Christ saw his Father constantly, and he allows us to share in his vision through his Passion and Resurrection. As creatures, we shall be transformed into the image and likeness of the Son when we behold God without a veil.

45. For this vision is a transforming vision : " We shall be like God, because we shall see him as he is” [25].

46. In other words, we shall be deified by the vision of God, and this will be an incredible joy in Heaven.

第3章　神の至福の御顔を見ること

41. トマス・アクィナスにとって、最大の喜びは神を見ることであり、逆に、最大の苦しみとは、神を見られないことだけでなく、決して神を見ることができないと知ることでもあります。不義な者たちとその拷問者たち、すなわち堕天使たちは、完全かつ至福の幸福をもたらす神の御顔、いわゆる「至福の視覚」を、永遠に奪われている、あるいは自ら奪ってしまったのです。

1. Le thème de la mort et de l'au-delà de la mort est central dans la foi chrétienne : Jésus a promis la vie éternelle à celui qui croit en lui. La mort n'est donc pas la fin de tout, il y a autre chose au-delà d'elle
2. Nous verrons dans une première partie comment l'humanité en général essaie de gérer le phénomène de la mort, et en particulier les anciens Grecs. Dans une seconde partie, nous aborderons la conception hébraïque de la mort avant de passer à la conception chrétienne.

1. Une constante chez l'homme

Une question qu'ignorent les autres animaux
3. L'être humain semble avoir été préoccupé depuis le début par la question de la mort : est-elle la fin de tout, et le défunt disparaît pour toujours dans le néant ? Ou bien le défunt subsiste-t-il d'une manière ou d'une autre ?

4. Je ne pense pas qu'il y ait un autre vivant à part l'homme qui se pose cette question, même si par ailleurs je crois que les animaux craignent la mort, et que certains sont capables de souffrir de la mort d'un de leurs congénères.

5. Pour moi, l'être humain est le seul être vivant à se poser la question de l'au-delà : au-delà dans le temps avec la question de la fin de la vie : y a-t-il quelque chose au-delà de la mort, mais aussi dans l'espace : y a-t-il un au-delà de notre univers ?

6. L'être humain est cet être qui s'arrête dans ses occupations pour lever les yeux au ciel. Non pas comme le lièvre qui redoute l'aigle au-dessus de lui, mais parce qu'il se demande ce qu'il y a là-haut. Un être qui porte constitutivement en lui une ouverture à quelque chose qu'il ne sait pas de plus grand que lui.

Ce que disent les paléontologues
7. Les paléontologues signalent qu'ils repèrent très tôt des traces de sépultures humaines. L'être humain prenait soin du cadavre du défunt par exemple en laissant à côté de lui un objet, comme si d'une manière ou d'une autre, le défunt pouvait en avoir encore besoin après sa mort.

8. Diverses réponses sont apparues pour répondre à la question de l'au-delà de la mort : y-a-t-il quelque chose qui survit au défunt ? Quoi ? Et comment ?

2. Les visions de la mort chez les anciens Grecs

Une survie végétative sous terre
9. Les Grecs en particulier pensaient qu'à la mort, une partie invisible, spirituelle, descendait sous terre dans le Royaume des morts, où elle menait une vie végétative terne et sans joie en regrettant la vraie vie, à savoir la vie sur terre. Il était possible de communiquer avec les morts, mais par contre on ne pouvait pas les ramener à la vie à la surface.

10. Une frontière infranchissable sépare les vivants des morts, comme le montre le mythe d'Orphée. Orphée est un veuf inconsolable qui descend dans le royaume des morts pour rechercher son épouse Eurydice. Comme il joue divinement de la lyre, le souverain du royaume souterrain, charmé par sa musique, l'autorise à remonter à la surface avec son épouse, mais à une condition : elle marchera derrière lui et il ne devra pas se retourner. Orphée entreprend donc de remonter à la surface, mais comme il n'entend pas les pas de son épouse, il se demande si elle le suit effectivement. Son inquiétude devient telle qu'il finit par commettre l'irréparable : il se retourne, mais c'est pour voir son épouse le quitter, cette fois-ci définitivement.

La montée au ciel de l'âme libérée du corps
11. Les Grecs développeront une autre conception fondée sur l'immortalité de l'âme, opposée à la corruption du corps matériel. Le corps humain résulterait de l'alliage accidentel entre l'âme incorruptible et éternelle, et une matière corruptible ; la mort résulte de la séparation de l'âme et du corps redevenu matière informe tandis que l'âme remonterait, si elle le peut, au ciel des idées, dans l'Empyrée qu'elle n'aurait jamais dû quitter - si elle ne le peut, elle se réincarnera dans un autre réceptacle matériel.

3. Les visions de la mort chez les Hébreux

Une conception nouvelle : la résurrection corporelle
12. Dans la conception hébraïque telle qu'elle ressort du second récit de création dans le Livre de la Genèse, l'être humain est constitué d'une partie matérielle, faite de glaise, et d'une partie immatérielle, un souffle venant de Dieu. La vie résulte de cette insufflation de Dieu ; que ce souffle s'en aille, et c'est la mort avec le corps qui retourne alors à son état informe [1]

13. Dans cette conception, la vie humaine résulte de l'alliance entre une partie matérielle et une partie immatérielle, mais à la différence de la conception grecque dualiste, les deux parties se complètent au lieu de s'opposer. Plus important encore, l'alliance entre matériel et spirituel résulte d'une volonté, d'un désir, celui de Dieu, et non pas d'un processus naturel impersonnel et mécanique.

Une explication historique : la persécution des Séleucides
14. L'idée que Dieu désire la vie aboutira au deuxième siècle après Jésus-Christ au concept de résurrection : si Dieu désire la vie, il n'acceptera pas la mort de ses fidèles et il leur redonnera la vie.

15. L'idée de la résurrection était nouvelle : jusqu'au deuxième siècle avant Jésus-Christ, l'idée était que le mort descendait au schéol où il menait une vie végétative, de manière analogue à la conception grecque vue plus haut, sans échappatoire possible [2].

16. Pour le prophète Isaïe au VIIIe siècle avant Jésus Christ, la mort semble l'horizon définitif pour les individus. Ils ne peuvent compter que sur leur descendance pour assurer leur survie, à titre collectif et non pas individuel.

La mort ne peut te rendre grâce, ni le séjour des morts, te louer. Ils n'espèrent plus ta fidélité, ceux qui descendent dans la fosse.
Le vivant, le vivant, lui, te rend grâce, comme moi, aujourd'hui. Et le père à ses enfants montrera ta fidélité. [3]

17. L'apparition de la croyance en la résurrection serait liée à la persécution des juifs par les Séleucides au deuxième siècle avant Jésus-Christ. Le Livre des Maccabées rapporte comment des juifs ont préféré la torture et la mort plutôt que d'abjurer leur foi. Le peuple juif a alors considéré que Dieu ne pouvait pas abandonner au schéol ses martyrs, il allait les ressusciter un jour.

18. Et de manière symétrique, Dieu allait aussi ressusciter les impies car leurs crimes ne pouvaient rester impunis : l'idée du jugement dernier est peut-être née en même temps que celle de la résurrection.

4. La vision de la mort chez les chrétiens

Reprise du récit de la création dans la Genèse
19. Héritiers de la Bible, nous croyons comme les juifs que la mort ne faisait pas partie
du plan de Dieu. Ce sont Adam et Ève qui ont introduit, par leur faute, la mort et le
mal dans le monde.

20. Le projet de Dieu initial, avant la faute, était un monde sans mort : Adam et Ève avaient accès à l'arbre de vie jusqu'à ce qu'ils désobéissent à Dieu en mangeant le fruit interdit. C'est alors que la mort s'est introduite dans le monde, nous dit le livre de la Genèse.

21. On considère souvent que le premier mort est Abel, assassiné par son frère Cain. Ce premier homicide annonce la haine, la violence et la guerre qui défigurent l'humanité. Mais à bien y regarder, le premier mort est un animal, tué pour sa peau : c'est en effet d'une tunique de peau que Dieu va recouvrir la nudité d'Adam et Ève. Le premier être vivant à subir la mort est un animal.

22. Avant la faute, il n'était pas question de tuer pour se nourrir : l'hommes mangeait les fruits, et les animaux se nourrissaient d'herbe. Il faudra attendre Noé pour que Dieu autorise l'être humain à tuer et manger les animaux. Mais que les êtres vivants s'entretuent ne faisait pas partie de son plan initial.

23. Dieu ne renonce pas, il veut que son projet se réalise : le peuple de la Bible, juifs et chrétiens, porte l'espérance qu'à un moment donné, la création retrouvera l'état d'innocence des débuts [4]

Le passage du corps charnel au corps spirituel
24. La foi chrétienne reprend la conception juive de l'être vivant comme corps animé ou, si l'on préfère, comme âme corporelle. L'idée grecque d'une âme immortelle qui quitte le corps à la mort est certes reprise, mais l'âme, frustrée par cette perte, « attend » de retrouver son corps dans un entre-deux avant la résurrection générale.

25. Il est entendu que le corps après la résurrection diffèrera du corps de chair terrestre [5]. Incorruptible, lumineux, immunisé contre la mort, il pourra se déplacer dans l'espace sans aucune restriction si l'on en croit le récit des apparitions de Jésus ressuscité : il peut traverser les murs, apparaître et disparaître à volonté.

26. Jésus ressuscité n'est pas immédiatement reconnu par ses disciples lors de ses apparitions, ce qui montre que son corps de ressuscité n'est pas identique à celui qu'il avait de son vivant sur terre : Jésus doit appeler Marie par son nom pour qu'elle le reconnaisse ; les deux disciples d'Emmaüs devront attendre que leur mystérieux compagnon de route rompe le pain pour découvrir qui il est.
Cependant, les disciples finissent par reconnaître le Jésus terrestre dans celui qui leur apparaît, ce qui veut dire aussi que ce corps glorieux a conservé un lien avec le corps terrestre : il est essentiellement le même, mais non identiquement - ipsum sed non idem en latin.

27. En fait, il faut bien dire que notre imagination ne peut pas s'élever au-dessus des catégories de l'espace et du temps qui nous structurent. Nous ne pouvons pas faire autrement que d'imaginer la résurrection comme un corps de chair qui se relève, à la manière de la résurrection de Lazare dans l'évangile de Jean. Mais soyons conscients que la réalité sera bien plus subtile - et plus sublime.

La croix, nouvel arbre de vie
28. Dans le récit de la Genèse,_Adam et Ève ont perdu l'accès à l'arbre de vie du fait de leur faute : voyant en Dieu un menteur jaloux de son statut divin, ils avaient voulu devenir des dieux malgré Dieu et sans Dieu en mangeant le fruit interdit. Cet acte de désobéissance fondamentale avait introduit la violence et la division à l'échelle de la création toute entière : homme contre homme, homme contre femme, l'homme contre la terre, l'homme contre l'animal, et réciproquement.

29. Mais nous avons à nouveau accès à un nouvel arbre de vie, la croix par laquelle Dieu nous donne le pardon de nos fautes et l'accès à la vie éternelle, la vie en Dieu. Sur la croix, nous trouvons le fruit de la vie éternelle, le corps et le sang du Christ.

30. En accédant au nouvel arbre de vie, le disciple du Christ entre dans une dynamique de libération de l'esclavage du péché et de la mort, il sort de la défiance et de la désobéissance à Dieu, pour devenir comme son Maître capable d'obéir totalement, sans réserve, sans rien garder pour soi dans l'entière confiance à Dieu.

31. Dans l'Évangile selon saint Jean, Jésus l'affirme :

« Celui qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang a la vie éternelle ; et moi, je le ressusciterai au dernier jour. En effet, ma chair est la vraie nourriture, et mon sang est la vraie boisson [6]. »

32. Ces propos ont plongé ses auditeurs dans la perplexité : s'agissait-il d'une invitation à du cannibalisme ? En fait, ils les entendaient au niveau littéral, alors que Jésus se situait au niveau sacramentel, un niveau qui dépasse le niveau symbolique : Jésus parlait de son corps de gloire après sa résurrection et non pas du corps cloué sur la croix – en sachant, comme nous l'avons dit plus haut, qu'il s'agit du même corps mais transformé, spiritualisé, rendu subtil : l'apôtre Thomas reconnaît le Christ aux plaies qui marquent le corps du Ressuscité – le même mais non pas à l'identique.

33. À mon avis, la résurrection échappe aux sens, elle est irreprésentable en tant que telle.
Il y a quelque chose qui est là et puis ce n'est plus là. Le reste est affaire de foi.

1. The theme of death and the afterlife is central to the Christian faith : Jesus promised eternal life to those who believe in him. Death is therefore not the end of everything ; there is something else beyond it

2. In the first part, we shall see how humanity in general attempts to deal with the phenomenon of death, and the ancient Greeks in particular. In the second part, we shall examine the Hebrew conception of death before moving on to the Christian conception.

1. A constant in human nature

A question unknown to other animals

3. Human beings seem to have been preoccupied from the very beginning with the question of death : is it the end of everything, and does the deceased vanish forever into nothingness ? Or does the deceased continue to exist in some way ?

4. I do not think there is any other living creature apart from humans that asks this question, even though I do believe that animals fear death, and that some are capable of grieving the death of one of their own kind.

5. For me, the human being is the only living creature to ask itself the question of the afterlife : the afterlife in time, with the question of the end of life—is there anything beyond death ?—but also in space : is there an afterlife beyond our universe ?

6. Human beings are creatures who pause in their activities to look up at the sky. Not like the hare that fears the eagle above it, but because they wonder what lies up there. A being who inherently carries within them an openness to something they do not know, something greater than themselves.
What palaeontologists say

7. Palaeontologists report that they find evidence of human burials from very early on. Human beings took care of the deceased's body, for example by placing an object beside them, as if, in some way, the deceased might still need it after death.

8. Various answers have emerged to address the question of the afterlife : is there anything that survives the deceased ? What ? And how ?

2. The ancient Greeks' views on death

A vegetative existence underground

9. The Greeks in particular believed that upon death, an invisible, spiritual part descended underground into the Kingdom of the Dead, where it led a dull, joyless vegetative existence, longing for true life, namely life on earth. It was possible to communicate with the dead, but it was not possible to bring them back to life on the surface.

10. An impassable boundary separates the living from the dead, as illustrated by the myth of Orpheus. Orpheus is an inconsolable widower who descends into the realm of the dead to search for his wife Eurydice. As he plays the lyre divinely, the ruler of the underworld, charmed by his music, allows him to return to the surface with his wife, but on one condition : she must walk behind him and he must not look back. Orpheus therefore sets out to return to the surface, but as he cannot hear his wife's footsteps, he wonders whether she is actually following him. His anxiety becomes so great that he eventually commits the irreparable : he turns round, only to see his wife leave him, this time for good.

The ascent to heaven of the soul freed from the body

11. The Greeks would develop another conception based on the immortality of the soul, as opposed to the corruption of the material body. The human body would result from the accidental union between the incorruptible and eternal soul, and corruptible matter ; death results from the separation of the soul and the body, which reverts to formless matter, whilst the soul ascends, if it can, to the heaven of ideas, to the Empyrean which it should never have left – if it cannot, it will be reincarnated in another material vessel.

3. The Hebrews' conceptions of death

A new concept : bodily resurrection

12. In the Hebrew conception as set out in the second account of creation in the Book of Genesis, human beings are composed of a material part, made of clay, and an immaterial part, a breath from God. Life results from this breathing of God ; should this breath depart, death ensues and the body returns to its formless state [7]

13. In this conception, human life results from the union of a material and an immaterial aspect, but unlike the Greek dualist conception, the two aspects complement rather than oppose one another. More importantly, the union between the material and the spiritual stems from a will, a desire—that of God—and not from an impersonal, mechanical natural process.

A historical explanation : the persecution by the Seleucids

14. The idea that God desires life would lead, in the second century AD, to the concept of resurrection : if God desires life, he will not accept the death of his faithful and will restore them to life.

15. The idea of the resurrection was new : until the second century BC, the belief was that the dead descended to Sheol where they led a vegetative existence, similar to the Greek conception discussed above, with no possible escape [8].

16. For the prophet Isaiah in the 8th century BC, death seems to be the final horizon for individuals. They can only rely on their descendants to ensure their survival, collectively rather than individually.

Death cannot give thanks to you, nor can the realm of the dead praise you. Those who go down to the grave no longer hope for your faithfulness.
The living, the living, they give thanks to you, as I do today. And a father shall show his children your faithfulness. [9]

The Book of Maccabees recounts how Jews chose torture and death rather than renounce their faith. The Jewish people then believed that God could not abandon his martyrs to Sheol ; he would raise them up one day.

18. And, conversely, God would also raise the wicked, for their crimes could not go unpunished : the idea of the Last Judgement may have arisen at the same time as that of the resurrection.

4. The Christian view of death

A retelling of the creation story in Genesis

19. As heirs to the Bible, we believe, like the Jews, that death was not part
of God's plan. It was Adam and Eve who, through their sin, brought death and
evil into the world.

20. God's original plan, before the Fall, was a world without death : Adam and Eve had access to the tree of life until they disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit. It was then that death entered the world, as the Book of Genesis tells us.

21. It is often thought that the first person to die was Abel, murdered by his brother Cain. This first homicide heralds the hatred, violence and war that disfigure humanity. But on closer inspection, the first to die was an animal, killed for its skin : it was indeed with a tunic of skin that God covered Adam and Eve's nakedness. The first living creature to suffer death was an animal.

22. Before the Fall, there was no question of killing for food : humans ate fruit, and animals fed on grass. It was not until Noah that God permitted humans to kill and eat animals. But living beings killing one another was not part of his original plan.

23. God does not give up ; he wants his plan to be fulfilled : the people of the Bible, Jews and Christians, hold out the hope that at some point, creation will return to the state of innocence of the beginning [10]

The transition from the physical body to the spiritual body

24. The Christian faith adopts the Jewish conception of the living being as an animated body or, if one prefers, as a corporeal soul. The Greek idea of an immortal soul that leaves the body at death is certainly adopted, but the soul, frustrated by this loss, ‘awaits' the reunion with its body in an in-between state before the general resurrection.

25. It is understood that the body after the resurrection will differ from the earthly fleshly body [11]. Incorruptible, luminous, immune to death, it will be able to move through space without any restriction, if we are to believe the accounts of the appearances of the risen Jesus : it can pass through walls, appear and disappear at will.

26. The risen Jesus is not immediately recognised by his disciples during his appearances, which shows that his resurrected body is not identical to the one he had whilst living on earth : Jesus must call Mary by name for her to recognise him ; the two disciples on the road to Emmaus must wait until their mysterious travelling companion breaks bread to discover who he is.
However, the disciples eventually recognise the earthly Jesus in the one who appears to them, which also means that this glorious body has retained a link with the earthly body : it is essentially the same, but not identical – ipsum sed non idem in Latin.

27. In fact, it must be said that our imagination cannot rise above the categories of space and time that structure us. We cannot help but imagine the resurrection as a body of flesh rising again, in the manner of the resurrection of Lazarus in the Gospel of John. But let us be aware that reality will be far more subtle – and more sublime.

The cross, the new tree of life

28. In the account of Genesis,_Adam and Eve lost access to the tree of life because of their transgression : seeing God as a liar jealous of his divine status, they had sought to become gods in spite of God and without God by eating the forbidden fruit. This act of fundamental disobedience introduced violence and division throughout the whole of creation : man against man, man against woman, man against the earth, man against the animal, and vice versa.

29. But we have access once more to a new tree of life, the cross through which God grants us forgiveness of our sins and access to eternal life, life in God. On the cross, we find the fruit of eternal life, the body and blood of Christ.

30. By accessing the new tree of life, the disciple of Christ enters into a process of liberation from the slavery of sin and death ; he emerges from mistrust and disobedience towards God, to become like his Master, capable of obeying completely, without reservation, keeping nothing for himself, in total trust in God.

31. In the Gospel according to Saint John, Jesus affirms :

“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life ; and I will raise them up on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink [12]. ”

32. These words left his listeners perplexed : was this an invitation to cannibalism ? In fact, they understood them literally, whereas Jesus was speaking on a sacramental level, a level that transcends the symbolic : Jesus was speaking of his glorified body after his resurrection, not of the body nailed to the cross – bearing in mind, as we said earlier, that it is the same body but transformed, spiritualised, made subtle : the apostle Thomas recognises Christ by the wounds that mark the body of the Risen One – the same but not identical.

33. In my view, the Resurrection eludes the senses ; it is unrepresentable as such.
There is something that is there, and then it is no longer there. The rest is a matter of faith.

3. 人間は、その誕生の当初から、死という問いについて深く考え続けてきたようです。死はすべての終わりなのでしょうか。そして、死者は永遠に無へと消え去ってしまうのでしょうか。それとも、死者は何らかの形で存在し続けるのでしょうか。

4. 動物も死を恐れているし、同種の死を悲しむ能力を持つ種もいるとは思います。しかし、この問いを自らに投げかける生き物は、人間以外には存在しないと思います。

5. 私にとって、死後の世界について自問するのは人間だけなのです。それは時間的な死後の世界、すなわち「死の先には何かがあるのか？」という命の終わりに関する問いだけでなく、空間的な死後の世界、つまり「私たちの宇宙の彼方に死後の世界はあるのか？」という問いでもあります。

6. 人間とは、自分の活動を中断して空を見上げる生き物です。頭上の鷲を恐れる野兎のようにではなく、そこに何があるのかと不思議に思うからです。人間とは、自分たちが知らない何か、自分たちよりも偉大な何かに対して、本質的に心を開いている存在なのです。

1. On the possibility of expressing faith

1§ Is it possible to put faith in an ineffable God into words ?

2§ One might already answer that God himself speaks to people using their own words. On Mount Sinai, God gave his commandments to the people in Hebrew. Jesus used human language to deliver his Sermon on the Mount).

3§ We therefore have the right to say what we believe about God, whilst remembering that these words are like stepping stones, signposts to help us move towards the inexpressible, towards that which lies beyond words.

4§ God agreed to make use of human words, despite the danger that human language, like all created reality, is marred by the original flaw of sin : human beings may misunderstand, or worse still, they may twist the meaning of words so that they serve their quest for narcissistic satisfaction, domination, and unbridled pleasure : “God said that, so you must obey me”.

5§ The devil himself used the word of God to tempt Jesus in the desert, even though God had just declared him to be his beloved Son at the Jordan.
“If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from the top of the Temple, for it is written in the Bible that the angels will come and carry you on their hands so that you do not strike a stone.”
Vigilance is required when engaging with the Scriptures, so as not to be deceived by the devil, or at the very least by our own sensitivity or misguided will.

2. Defining faith in a normative manner

6§ The Great Church was led to articulate the Christian faith in order to respond to contradictory discourses about Jesus.

7§ The ecumenical councils of the early centuries translated the faith, as expressed by the Church in its manner of praying and praising God, into concepts drawn from Greek philosophy : thus the Creed was formulated from the baptismal formulas of local Churches.

8§ The definition of the Christian faith has normative value, in the sense that the Creed defines what a Christian must believe to belong to the Church.
At a time when Christianity was the state religion, to believe otherwise meant not being part of the Church and thus being excluded from society, or at least being part of it but as a second-class citizen with more duties and fewer rights [2].

9§ Supporters of unauthorised expressions of Christianity were accused of heresy and punished, religiously speaking, as an attack on the unity of the Body of Christ, and politically speaking, as an attack on Christian public order[ [In today's secular societies, where the state neither promotes nor supports any religion, and where it holds a monopoly on coercion, we would speak of heterodoxy rather than heresy.

In my view, contemporary heterodoxies merely repackage, in modern guise, ideas dating from the early centuries of the Christian era across a spectrum ranging from a Jesus who was merely human and deified after his death – 0% God, 100% human – and a Jesus who is solely God and merely pretends to be human – 0% human and 100% something else – in order to avoid the arithmetic discomfort of a Jesus who is 100% man and 100% God]].

10§ One may be resistant to the idea of regulating the expression of faith, but one may also see it as a well-trodden path resulting from the experience accumulated by the Church over centuries. Generations have followed this path, thereby avoiding straying off course [3].

As St Augustine said, it is one thing to see a city from afar in the midst of a wild forest, quite another to reach it safely [4]

11§ The Church had also set about compiling a list of inspired writings of normative value, known as the ‘canon of Scripture' : thus, four Gospels were selected whilst others, such as the Gospel of Thomas, were not – which does not mean that they were not inspired, but they posed difficulties that prevented them from having the normative value required to feature in the canon of Scripture [5]

3. On the necessity of professing one's faith

12§ Let us return to our initial question : why speak, since words cannot convey the ineffable reality of God ? Certainly, we might reply, they cannot convey it, but they can point towards it.

13§ And, for its part, this ineffable reality wishes to communicate itself.
It communicates itself to me because it desires my happiness, which is life in communion with it, but also so that I may bear witness to it to others, that they too may know this happiness.

14§ And this witness is given through the example of how I live on this earth and under this sky, but also through the words that give meaning – direction – to what I experience.

15§ Neither my words nor my example produce the experience of life with God, but they can help the person before me to set out on the path that leads to the Father.

16§ ‘You want to encounter Christ. Here is a path : read the Gospel of Mark, the shortest of the four ; spend time with Christians ; step inside your local church and attend services ; pray, speak of what you are experiencing as if you were speaking in the dark, without knowing to whom you are speaking but believing that there is someone who wants your happiness, who is there and who is listening to you.

17§ Go forward, walk on, trust that the path leads somewhere.
This path has been trodden by so many men and women ; it has been maintained and marked out from generation to generation, so go forward with confidence.

18§ And at some point, someone will join you on this path, and you will experience a dazzling revelation—that of Simon Peter when he began to perceive the mystery that animates Jesus, that of Nathanael when he first met the Rabbi of Galilee [6], and after Christ's resurrection, the experience of the pilgrims to Emmaus or that of Thomas [7]. »

4. Faith is a grace

19§ In my view, faith is something that comes upon you whilst you are walking along the path.

20§ The path does not produce faith : it arises when God sees fit, and when the pilgrim has progressed far enough to be ready to receive it.
Faith is a grace from God, which does not mean that the pilgrim has nothing to do : he must desire this grace ; he must prepare to receive it by moving forward with confidence.

21§ What happens to the prophet Elijah is an illustration of this : he knows that he is going to be taken up to heaven, but he knows neither where nor when. He simply walks along the path and, at a certain point, is taken up into heaven [8].

22§ Blessed is the one who receives this grace, but let us be careful not to regard it as our property : rather than saying, ‘I have faith' as if we had a sweet in our pocket, let us say instead : ‘God has entrusted the faith to me, and He is free to take it back whenever He wishes'.

23§ I am thinking of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. She felt God's existence to be so self-evident that it filled her with joy and peace ; indeed, she could not understand how anyone could fail to believe in God. This is what she said to herself one night.

24§ When she woke the next day, she found herself plunged into the night of faith. Not that God had withdrawn the grace of faith from her, but she no longer experienced its manifestations : the obviousness, the joys and the tangible consolations were no more [9].

5. The privileged… and the rest ?

25§ Firstly, God desires that all people be saved ; therefore, he offers the grace of faith to all people, but through the mediation of a few who, by their words and way of life, will bear witness to the power of redemption that flows from the cross of Christ.

26§ Let us therefore take heed, we who are animated by faith in Jesus Christ, who died for our sins and rose again for our eternal life : let us not consider our happiness to be assured (cf. above), nor let us consider ourselves to be among the happy few, that small number of blessed elect who can afford to look down on others.

27§ Let us rather tell ourselves that God has certainly chosen us to reach us, but also to reach the multitude of people through us.

28§ The great joy we experience in believing in God, we cannot and must not keep to ourselves ; it will be all the greater for being shared – and indeed it is meant to be shared : when someone lives by Christ, it shows.

29§ The Gospels show us that Jesus was surrounded by several concentric circles. Among all those he had drawn to himself, some remained at home, supporting Jesus with their possessions, such as Martha and Mary who invited Jesus and his followers into their home ; others followed him on the roads, renouncing their possessions ; and from among them, Jesus chose twelve, whom he appointed as his apostles : they were chosen from among all the disciples, but it was to serve Jesus in his mission to reach out to all humanity.

30§ At the general resurrection, I believe we shall see this phenomenon of concentric circles around Jesus again, but it will not give rise to jealousy in some or arrogance in others : the spirit of rivalry, of envious or disdainful comparison, will have vanished ; everyone's joy will be the joy of others ; the one in the outermost circle will rejoice in the joy of the one in the innermost circle, and the one in the innermost circle will derive no sense of superiority or contempt towards the one in the next outermost circle. This undoubtedly has to do with the communion of saints.

31§ I would say that at the table of the Kingdom, the essential thing is not to be in the first or last row : what matters is having accepted the invitation to the wedding feast of the Lamb and having attended in fitting attire. What is on each guest's plate will be more than enough for them ; no one will cast envious glances at their neighbour's plate, except to rejoice with them in the generosity of the host.

1. De la possibilité de dire la foi

1§ Est-il possible de mettre des mots la foi en un Dieu ineffable ?

2§ On peut déjà répondre que Dieu lui-même parle aux hommes avec leurs mots à eux. Au Mont Sinaï, Dieu a donné ses commandements au peuple en hébreu. Jésus s'est servi du langage humain pour prononcer son Sermon sur la montagne).

3§ Nous avons donc le droit de dire ce que nous croyons de Dieu, en nous rappelant qu'ils sont comme des tremplins, des poteaux indicateurs pour nous aider à aller vers l'indicible, vers ce qu'il y a au-delà des mots.

4§ Dieu a accepté de passer par des mots humains, avec le danger que le langage humain, comme toute réalité créée, est traversé par la faille originelle du péché : l'être humain peut mal comprendre ou même pire, il peut tordre le sens des mots afin qu'ils servent sa quête de satisfaction narcissique, de domination, de jouissance déréglée : « Dieu a dit ça, donc tu dois m'obéir ».

5§ Le diable lui-même s'est servi de la parole de Dieu pour tenter Jésus au désert alors que Dieu l'avait déclaré comme son Fils bien aimé juste avant au Jourdain.
« Si tu es le Fils de Dieu, jette-toi du haut du Temple car il écrit dans la Bible que les anges viendront te porter sur les mains afin que tu ne heurtes une pierre ».

La vigilance est requise dans la fréquentation des Écritures, afin de ne pas se faire leurrer par le diable, sinon du moins par notre sensibilité ou notre volonté mal ajustée.

2. Définir la foi de manière normative

6§ La Grande Église a été amenée à expliciter la foi chrétienne pour répondre aux discours contradictoires sur Jésus.

7§ Les conciles œcuméniques des premiers siècles ont traduit en concepts tirés de la philosophie grecque la foi telle que l'Église l'exprimait dans sa manière de prier et louer Dieu : ainsi le Credo a été élaboré à partir des formules baptismales d'Églises locales.

8§ La définition de la foi chrétienne a valeur normative, au sens où le Credo définit ce que doit croire le chrétien qui veut appartenir à l'Église.
Au temps où la religion chrétienne était la religion d'État, croire autrement, c'était ne pas faire partie de l'Église et donc être exclu de la société, ou du moins en faire partie mais comme citoyen de seconde zone avec plus de devoirs et moins de droits [11].

9§ Les partisans d'expressions non autorisées du christianisme étaient accusés d'hérésie et sanctionnés sur le plan religieux comme une atteinte à l'unité du Corps du Christ, et sur le plan politique comme une atteinte à l'ordre public chrétien [12].

10§ On peut être réfractaire à l'idée d'une régulation de l'expression de la foi, mais on peut aussi y voir un chemin balisé fruit de l'expérience accumulée par l'Église pendant des siècles. Des générations ont emprunté ce chemin en évitant ainsi le hors-piste [13].
Comme le disait le père de l'Église saint Augustin, une chose est de voir de loin une cité au milieu d'une forêt sauvage, autre chose est d'y arriver sans encombres [14]

11§ L'Église s'était aussi attachée à dresser la liste des écrits inspirés à valeur normative, ce qu'on appelle le « canon des Ecritures » : ainsi, quatre Évangiles ont été retenus alors que d'autres comme l'Évangile de Thomas ne l'ont pas été – ce qui ne veut pas dire qu'ils n'étaient pas inspirés, mais ils posaient des difficultés qui les empêchaient d'avoir la valeur normative requise pour figurer dans le canon des Ecritures [15]

3. De la nécessité de dire sa foi

12§ Revenons à notre question du début : pourquoi parler puisque les mots ne peuvent rendre compte de la réalité ineffable de Dieu. Certes, répondrons-nous, ils ne peuvent pas en rendre compte, mais ils peuvent pointer vers elle.

13§ Et, de son côté, cette réalité ineffable veut se communiquer.
Elle se communique à moi parce qu'elle veut mon bonheur qui est la vie de communion avec elle, mais aussi pour que je témoigne d'elle aux autres afin qu'eux aussi connaissent ce bonheur.

14§ Et le témoignage se fait par l'exemple de ma manière de vivre sur cette terre et sous ce ciel, mais aussi par les mots qui donnent le sens – la direction – de ce que je vis.
15§ Ni mes mots ni mon exemple ne produisent l'expérience de la vie avec Dieu, mais ils peuvent aider la personne en face à se mettre en marche sur le chemin qui mène au Père.

16§ « Tu veux rencontrer le Christ. Voilà un chemin : lis l'Évangile de Marc, le plus court des quatre ; fréquente des chrétiens ; pousse la porte de l'église locale et assiste à des célébrations ; prie, dis ce que tu vis comme si tu parlais dans le noir, sans savoir à qui tu parles mais en croyant qu'il y a quelqu'un qui veut ton bonheur, qui est là et qui t'écoute.

17§ Avance, marche, fais confiance que le chemin mène quelque part.
Ce chemin a été emprunté par tant d'hommes et de femmes, il a été entretenu, balisé de générations en générations, alors avance en confiance.

18§ Et à un moment, quelqu'un va te rejoindre sur ce chemin, et tu feras l'expérience fulgurante d'une révélation, celle de Simon-Pierre quand il a commencé à percevoir le mystère qui anime Jésus, celle de Nathanaël quand il rencontre pour la première fois le rabbi de Galilée [16], et après la résurrection du Christ, l'expérience des pèlerins d'Emmaus ou celle de Thomas [17]. »

4. La foi est une grâce

19§ D'après moi, la foi est quelque chose qui vous tombe dessus alors que vous êtes en train de marcher sur le chemin.

20§ Le chemin ne produit pas la foi : elle survient quand Dieu le juge bon, et que le pèlerin a suffisamment avancé pour être prêt à la recevoir.
La foi est une grâce de Dieu, ce qui ne signifie pas que le pèlerin n'a rien à faire : il doit désirer cette grâce, il doit se préparer à la recevoir en avançant avec confiance.

21§ Ce qui arrive au prophète Élie en est une illustration : il sait qu'il va être enlevé au ciel, mais il ne sait ni où ni quand. Simplement il avance sur le chemin et, à un moment donné, il est enlevé au ciel [18].

22§ Heureux celui qui reçoit cette grâce, mais attention à ne pas considérer qu'elle est notre propriété : plutôt que dire : « j'ai la foi » comme on a un bonbon dans sa poche, disons plutôt : « Dieu m'a confié en dépôt la foi et il est libre de reprendre ce dépôt quand il le veut ».

23§ Je pense à sainte Thérèse de Lisieux. Elle ressentait l'existence de Dieu comme une évidence qui la remplissait de joie et de paix aussi ne comprenait-elle pas comment on ne pouvait pas croire en Dieu. Voilà ce qu'elle se disait une nuit.

24§ En réveillant le lendemain, elle s'est retrouvée plongée dans la nuit de la foi. Non pas que Dieu ne lui faisait plus grâce de la foi, mais elle n'en goûtait plus les manifestations : c'en était fini de l'évidence, des joies et des consolations sensibles [19].

5. Les privilégiés… et les autres ?

25§ D'abord, Dieu veut que tous les hommes soient sauvés, donc il propose la grâce de la foi à tous les hommes, mais en passant par la médiation de quelques-uns qui, par leurs paroles et leur façon de vivre, témoigneront de la puissance de relèvement qui se déploie à partir de la croix du Christ.

26§ Attention donc à nous qui sommes animés par la foi en Jésus Christ mort pour nos fautes et ressuscité pour notre vie éternelle : ne considérons pas que notre bonheur est acquis (cf. plus haut), et ne considérons pas non plus que nous faisons partie des happy few, de ce petit nombre d'heureux élus qui peuvent se permettre de regarder les autres avec condescendance.

27§ Disons-nous bien plutôt que Dieu nous a élus certes pour nous atteindre, mais aussi pour atteindre la multitude des hommes à travers nous.

28§ Le grand bonheur que nous éprouvons à croire en Dieu, nous ne pouvons ni ne devons le garder pour nous, il sera d'autant plus grand qu'il sera partagé – et d'ailleurs il est fait pour être partagé : quand quelqu'un vit du Christ, cela se sent.

29§ Les évangiles nous montrent que Jésus était entouré de plusieurs cercles concentriques. Parmi tous ceux qu'il avait attiré à lui, certains restaient chez eux en soutenant Jésus de leurs biens, tels Marthe et Marie qui Invitaient Jésus et sa suite chez elles, d'autres le suivaient sur les routes en renonçant à leurs biens, et parmi eux Jésus en a choisi douze, qu'il a institué comme ses apôtres : ils étaient choisis entre tous les disciples, mais c'était pour servir Jésus dans sa mission de rejoindre l'humanité entière.

30§ Lors de la résurrection générale, je crois que nous retrouverons ce phénomène des cercles concentriques autour de Jésus, mais cela ne soulèvera pas la jalousie des uns et la superbe des autres : l'esprit de rivalité, de comparaison envieuse ou dédaigneuse, aura disparu, la joie de chacun fera la joie des autres, celui qui se trouve au dernier cercle se réjouira de la joie de celui qui se trouve au premier cercle et celui au premier cercle n'en tirera aucun sentiment de supériorité ou de mépris par rapport à celui au dernier cercle suivant. Cela a à voir sans aucun doute avec la communion des saints.

31§ Je dirais qu'à la table du Royaume, l'essentiel n'est pas d'être au premier ou au dernier rang : l'essentiel est d'avoir accepté l'invitation au repas des noces de l'Agneau et de s'y être rendu dans une tenue digne. Ce qui est dans l'assiette de chacun des convives lui suffira largement, personne ne lorgnera sur l'assiette de son voisin sinon pour se réjouir avec lui de la prodigalité du maître de maison.

1. 信仰を表現する可能性について

1§ 言葉では言い表せない神への信仰を、言葉で表すことは可能だろうか？

2§ 神ご自身が、人々の言葉を使って人々に語りかけている、とすでに答える人もいるかもしれない。シナイ山で、神はヘブライ語で人々に戒めを与えられた。イエスは人間の言葉を用いて、山上の説教を説かれた。

3§ したがって、私たちは神について信じていることを語る権利を持っている。ただし、それらの言葉は、言葉では表せないもの、言葉の彼方にあるものへと向かうための踏み石や道標のようなものであることを忘れてはならない。

4§ 神は、人間の言葉を用いることに同意された。とはいえ、すべての被造物と同様に、人間の言語もまた罪という原初的な欠陥によって傷つけられているという危険は伴う。人間は言葉を誤解したり、さらに悪いことに、自己愛的な満足、支配、そして抑制のない快楽を求めるために、言葉の意味をねじ曲げてしまうかもしれない。「神がそう言われたのだから、お前は私に服従しなければならない」と。

5§ ヨルダン川で神がイエスを「愛する子」と宣言した直後にもかかわらず、悪魔自身、荒野でイエスを誘惑するために神の言葉を用いた。

2. 規範的な方法で信仰を定義する

6§ 偉大なる教会は、イエスに関する矛盾した言説に応答するために、キリスト教の信仰を明確に表現するに至った。

7§ 初期の数世紀における公会議は、教会が祈りと神への賛美の仕方において表現していた信仰を、ギリシャ哲学に由来する概念へと翻訳した。こうして、使徒信条は、各地の教会の洗礼式文から定式化されたのである。

8§ キリスト教信仰の定義は規範的価値を持つ。すなわち、使徒信条は、教会に属するためにキリスト教徒が信じなければならないことを定義している。

3. 信仰を告白する必要性について

12§ 最初の問いに戻ろう。言葉では神の言い表せない実在を伝えることができないのなら、なぜ語るのか？確かに、言葉ではそれを伝えることはできないが、それに向かって指し示すことはできる、と私たちは答えるかもしれない。

13§ そして、その言い表せない実在そのものが、自らを伝えようとしているのである。
それは、私との交わりにおける命である私の幸福を願っているから私に自らを伝えようとするが、同時に、他の人々にもこの幸福を知ってもらえるよう、私が他者にその証しを立てるためでもある。

14§ そして、この証しは、私がこの地上で、この空の下でどのように生きるかという模範を通してなされるが、同時に、私が経験することに意味――方向性――を与える言葉を通してもなされる。

15§ 私の言葉も、私の生き様も、神との共にあるという体験そのものを生み出すわけではないが、それらは私の前にいる人が、父へと至る道を歩み始める助けとなることはできる。

16§ 「あなたはキリストに出会いたいと願っている。ここに一つの道がある。四つの福音書の中で最も短いマルコによる福音書を読み、クリスチャンたちと時間を過ごし、地元の教会に足を運び礼拝に参加し、祈りなさい。そして、暗闇の中で、誰に話しているのか分からずとも、あなたの幸せを願い、そこにいて、あなたの声に耳を傾けてくれる誰かがいると信じて、今体験していることを語りなさい。

17§ 進んでください、歩き続けてください。その道がどこかに通じていると信じて。
この道は、これまでに数え切れないほどの男女によって踏み固められてきました。代々受け継がれ、示されてきた道です。ですから、自信を持って進んでください。

4. 信仰は恵みである

19§ 私の見解では、信仰とは、その道を歩んでいる最中に、あなたに降りかかるものである。

20§ 道そのものが信仰を生み出すわけではない。信仰は、神がそうお定めになった時、そして巡礼者がそれを受け入れる準備が整うほどに十分に進んだ時に生じるのである。
信仰は神からの恵みであるが、それは巡礼者に何もしなくてよいという意味ではない。彼はこの恵みを切望しなければならない。また、確信を持って前進することで、それを受け入れる準備をしなければならない。

21§ 預言者エリヤに起こったことは、このことをよく表している。彼は天に上げられることを知っていたが、どこへ、いつ上げられるかは知らなかった。彼はただ道を歩み続け、ある時点で天に上げられたのである [25]。

5. 選ばれた者たち……そして、それ以外の者たちは？

25§ 第一に、神はすべての人々が救われることを望んでおられる。それゆえ、神はすべての人々に信仰の恵みを与えようとされるが、それは、その言葉と生き方によって、キリストの十字架から流れ出る贖いの力を証しする、ごく少数の者たちを媒介として行われるのである。

26§ それゆえ、私たちの罪のために死に、永遠のいのちのために復活されたイエス・キリストへの信仰に生かされている私たちは、注意深くあるべきである。自分の幸福が保証されているとは考えず（前項参照）、また、他人を侮る余裕のある、祝福された選ばれた者たちの少数派である、幸福な少数者の一員であるとも考えてはならない。

27§ むしろ、神は確かに私たちに手を差し伸べるために私たちを選ばれたが、同時に、私たちを通して多くの人々に手を差し伸べるためにも選ばれたのだと、自らに言い聞かせよう。

28§ 神を信じることで味わう大きな喜びは、自分だけのものにしておくことはできず、またそうしてはならない。分かち合うことによって、その喜びはさらに大きくなる――そして、それは本来分かち合うためにあるのだ。キリストによって生きる者は、その生き様によってそれが示される。

[12] Dans les sociétés laïques actuelles où l'État ne promeut ni ne soutient aucune religion, et où il a le monopole de la coercition, on parlera d'une hétérodoxie plutôt que d'une hérésie.

Selon moi, les hétérodoxies actuelles ne font que reprendre avec des habits modernes des idées datant des premiers siècles de l'ère chrétienne dans un spectre allant du Jésus seulement humain et divinisé après sa mort – 0% Dieu 100% humain- et un Jésus uniquement Dieu et faisant seulement semblant d'être humain - 0% humain et 100 % autre chose -, pour éviter l'inconfort arithmétique d'un Jésus 100% homme et 100% Dieu

[13] Une personne peut être convaincue qu'elle a mieux compris le mystère du Christ que l'Église, et elle ira peut-être jusqu'à fonder sa propre église. Attention cependant aux illuminations qui disent peu sinon rien de Dieu et beaucoup de la personne qui les revendique.

[14] Faire confiance à l'Église et au chemin qu'elle propose vers le Royaume de Dieu est difficile pour nombre de nos contemporains qui se défient de tout ce qui est institution : trop d'entre elles, qu'elles soient politiques, militaires ou religieuses, s'étant trompées ou pire, ayant menti.

Plus fondamentalement, la pensée moderne agit comme un dissolvant par rapport à tout ce qui se donne comme vrai, assuré ou définitif, en un mot digne de confiance : pour elle, tout est question de rapport de force, de volonté de domination, de recherche de l'intérêt personnel, tout cela avançant masqué sous des propos moraux factices – j'attribue cette tendance idéologique au travail de sape aux « maîtres du soupçon », Marx, Nietzsche et Freud.

L'Évangile de Jean se distingue des trois autres évangiles en particulier par sa « christologie descendante » : il part de l'intérieur de la Trinité pour ensuite faire descendre sur terre le Fils, la deuxième personne de la Trinité, alors que les évangiles synoptiques partent de Jésus sur terre pour l'élever ensuite au Ciel – christologie « ascendante ». Je parle en connaissance de cause, moi qui me suis couché à deux heures du matin après une session de doom scrolling - de « défilement funeste » de mini vidéos. « C'est la dernière vidéo après je me couche »… « Oui mais la suivante a l'air intéressante »… « Ok mais c'est la dernière », et ainsi de suite jusqu'à deux heures de matin. Résultat : je vais à la louange du matin déjà fatigué, mon cerveau est alourdi par le brouhaha de mots, d'images et les charges affectives qu'ils charrient et mon appétit pour le Ciel passe au second plan.	I speak from experience, having gone to bed at two in the morning after a session of doom scrolling through short videos. ‘This is the last video, then I'm going to bed'… ‘Yes, but the next one looks interesting'… “OK, but this is the last one,” and so on until two in the morning. Du temps de Jésus, les foules rassasiées au désert ne lèvent pas non plus les yeux vers le ciel : « On a un fournisseur de pain et de poissons sans limite, et qui est gratuit, ce serait pratique de l'avoir comme roi, enlevons-le de force » se disent-elles. Les foules veulent du pain et du poisson pour cette vie-ci, sans voir que se tient sous leurs yeux celui qui peut donner la nourriture pour la vie éternelle. Elles se sont focalisées sur l'aspect matériel de la multiplication des pains sans percevoir sa portée spirituelle.	In Jesus' day, the crowds fed in the desert didn't look up to heaven either : “We've got a supplier of bread and fish with no limits, and it's free ; it would be handy to have him as king, let's seize him by force,” they said to themselves. The crowds want bread and fish for this life, without seeing that standing before their very eyes is the One who can give the food for eternal life. Comment faire lever les yeux des hommes vers le Ciel ? Comment faire pour les libérer du poids du péché qui les courbe vers la terre ? se demande Dieu. Et il a trouvé un moyen : l'élévation de son Fils sur la croix, afin que les hommes lèvent les yeux vers celui qu'ils ont mis en croix.	How can I make people lift their eyes to Heaven ? How can I free them from the weight of sin that bends them towards the earth ? God asks himself. フランス・リールのドミニコ会教会において [1]、キリスト教信仰の二つの偉大な象徴、すなわち十字架と聖体の食卓、言い換えれば祭壇が一体となっているのを見ることができます。キリストの御体を宿す十字架は、祭壇に深く根ざしつつ、その上に堂々とそびえ立っています。この配置は、信仰の現実を象徴的に表しています。すなわち、教会で日々捧げられる聖体の犠牲は、二千年前、ユダヤの地で十字架の上に行われたキリストの唯一の犠牲によって支えられているのです。	In the Dominican church in Lille (France) [2], we find the two great symbols of the Christian faith united : the cross and the Eucharistic table, or in other words, the altar ; the cross, bearing the body of Christ, dominates the altar whilst being rooted within it. This arrangement] figuratively expresses a reality of faith : the Eucharistic sacrifices celebrated daily in the church are sustained by the unique sacrifice of Christ wrought on the cross two thousand years ago in Judea. ですから、私たちは注意深くありましょう。キリストの御体を受けることは、この「完全な抱擁」の力学の中へと入り込むことを受け入れることです。聖アウグスティヌスは、キリストの御体を私が取り込むのではなく、キリストの御体が私を取り込むのだ、と語りました。	So let us be attentive. To receive the Body of Christ is to accept entering into this dynamic of total embrace. Saint Augustine said that it is not I who assimilate the Body of Christ, but the Body of Christ that assimilates me.	Alors soyons attentifs. Communier au corps du Christ, c'est accepter d'entrer dans cette dynamique de saisie intégrale. Saint Augustin disait que ce n'est pas moi qui assimile le Corps du Christ, c'est le Corps du Christ qui m'assimile.
キリストの御体は、宇宙の他のすべてと築かれた関係から織り成され、それと共に一つとなった私の肉なる体を取り込みます。	The Body of Christ assimilates my body of flesh, woven from all the relationships forged with the rest of the universe, with which it has become united. 私自身の次元において、聖体拝領を受けることによって、私は二千年前、キリストの自発的な受難に由来する普遍的な連帯の運動を継続しているのです [5]。受難を通じて被造物と一つとなったキリストは、父のもとへの昇天、すなわち復活と昇天において、被造物を共に引き上げることができるのです。なぜなら、それが御父の御心だからです。すなわち、被造物が死から救われ、永遠の命に入るということです。	On my own scale, by receiving Communion, I continue the movement of universal solidarity stemming from Christ's voluntary Passion two thousand years ago [6]. Having become united with Creation through his Passion, Christ can draw it up with him in his ascent to the Father, Resurrection and Ascension. For such is the will of his Father : that Creation be saved from death and enter into eternal life.	À mon échelle, en communiant, je continue le mouvement de solidarisation universelle à partir de la Passion volontaire du Christ il y a deux mille ans [7]. Rendu solidaire de la Création par sa Passion, le Christ peut l'entraîner avec lui dans sa montée vers le Père, tout ensemble Résurrection et Ascension. Car telle est la volonté de son Père : que la Création soit sauvée de la mort et qu'elle entre dans la vie éternelle.

それで、ユダヤ人たちは、「どうしてこの人は自分の肉を我々に食べさせることができるのか」と、互いに激しく議論し始めた。	⁵² Sur quoi, les Juifs se mirent à discuter violemment entre eux : « Comment celui-là peut-il nous donner sa chair à manger ? »	The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat ? .
