‘esperer-isshoni’ : by giving our project this name, we aim to provide our readers with the keys to understanding how the project works right from the start. [2]
It is about hope, and about hoping ‘together’ (isshoni in Japanese).
We are aiming for an attitude that encompasses the whole of (human) existence, in solidarity with others ; we are not aiming merely to produce knowledge that stimulates only the intellectual aspect of the human being.
To put it another way, our aim is to inspire a shift, an emotion (a movement that draws us out of) our hearts (the heart being understood as the centre of decision-making and reflection). Together. The perspective is that of shared conversion – our own and that of our brothers and sisters in humanity.
Conversion to what, from what, and why ?
Our premise, our fundamental conviction, is that human beings are defined as beings in the making, both on an individual level and as a species. As beings in the making, human beings have the mission to build their future—a future that unfolds before them as they move forward, a future they hope for. Human beings harbour an intuition about this future they are building : a future of communion amongst humankind, a communion in which each person’s uniqueness plays harmoniously within the greater symphony, without rivalry, envy or jealousy. A future in which the cosmos is finally reconciled with itself, where the joy of each individual will bring happiness to all. Human beings relate all their achievements to this intuition, and it is by this yardstick that they measure their validity, for themselves and their brothers and sisters in humanity – at least, this is what we believe they must do if they are to live up to their own potential.
This hope calls for a change of heart, if we are not to remain at the stage of ‘wishful thinking’, as the English so aptly put it, where one simply waves one’s arms in the air and sighs with an air of misery, before moving on to other things – to more serious matters.
Our view of humankind as a mystery.
We see humankind as a hybrid being, a being with dual roots – which makes it a mysterious being. The mystery that is the human being, called to dwell beneath the sky and upon the earth, feet rooted in the earth—that earth from which they come and to which they shall return—with their eyes turned towards the sky, that sky with which they feel a kinship and which they also wish to inhabit. The mystery of the human being with dual solidarity, with dual roots – a hybrid being, woven from many threads – by very nature. Woven from the earth, yet also drawn by a yearning, a hope for the heavens – for themselves and for the earth. Dual solidarity, dual constitution, which makes their dwelling twofold : man inhabits the earth not only by populating it with houses, holy places, bridges and roads – with stones and steel drawn from the earth – but also by expressing it through stories, works of art and cultures – with symbols that speak of the world, from the depths of the earth and the underworld, right up to the highest heavens.
Our particular position as Christian believers
We wish to inform the reader that our personal position is that of a Catholic Christian. We also wish to point out that we have endeavoured to clearly distinguish between our different levels of discourse, specifying those passages explicitly inspired by our confessional stance.
Our position is rooted in the Bible, which speaks of human beings as being invoked, summoned and challenged : constituted at the very core of their being by a word that precedes them (invocation) and calls them towards a future of communion (challenge), both individually and communally, with their brothers and sisters and, no doubt, with the entire cosmos (summoning). Hope for a universal communion, for a universe reconciled with itself and with the mysterious Word that ceaselessly brings it into being and sustains it.
For us, hope in its biblical form has already found its fulfilment in the event of the Word made flesh to the very end, in the event of that man born two thousand years ago in a corner of Palestine, who revealed the heights to which humankind is called to live, and who realised this within himself – for all human beings. In Jesus, our Christian perspective enables us to perceive the figure of the perfect man, who has fully fulfilled human existence in its mystery.
