| Mes frères et sœurs, le père Paul et moi, nous nous sommes arrêtés au bas des marches pour nous incliner avant de monter à l’autel. Ce temps d’arrêt est précieux pour moi, il me permet de dire mon respect devant quelque chose de plus grand que moi et dont je vais m’approcher. | Brothers and sisters, Father Paul and I have stopped briefly to bow at the base of the stairs before stepping up to the altar. I enjoy this precious downtime which allows me to show my respect in front of something bigger than me that I am going to approach. |
| Il en est allé sans doute ainsi pour le disciple bien-aimé que nous fêtons aujourd’hui [1] : l’apôtre Jean s’est arrêté sur le seuil du tombeau, comme retenu par le pressentiment que quelque chose de saint, de sacré était à l’œuvre là et qu’on n’y entrait pas sans préparation, sans précaution. | Maybe something like that occurred when the beloved disciple that we are celebrating today [2] stopped on the threshold of the tomb, as if he was prevented from entering by the feeling that something holy, something sacred was at work there and that one could not enter without some preparation, without caution. |
| Je me souviens inversement d’un incident survenu pendant que je faisais visiter le couvent dominicain de La Tourette dessiné par l’architecte mondialement connu Le Corbusier. Alors que nous nous trouvions dans la chapelle, je vis un des visiteurs se coucher sur l’autel pour mieux prendre une photo. Je lui fis remarquer qu’il prenait ses aises sur l’endroit où était célébré le saint sacrifice. Manifestement, le visiteur ne voyait pas dans l’autel ce que moi j’y voyais. | Conversely I remember an incident while I was showing the Dominican Convent of La Tourette designed by the world-class architect Le Corbusier. In the chapel, one of the visitors laid down on the altar to take a better photo. I pointed to him that he was making himself comfortable on the place where the holy sacrifice was celebrated. The visitor obviously did not see what I saw in the altar. |
| De fait, qu’est-ce que l’on voit quand on regarde un autel dans une église ? Sans la foi, nos yeux y voient seulement un parallélépipède, en bois ou en pierre, recouvert à l’occasion d’un tissu. | As a matter of fact, what do we see when we look at an altar in a church ? Without the faith, our eyes see only a parallelepiped made out of wood or stone and covered on the occasion by a table cloth. |
| Maintenant, mes frères et sœurs, que nous dit notre cœur de croyant ? qu’est-ce qui est à l’œuvre invisiblement dans, à travers et sous l’autel visible ? Quelle est la figure qui s’y dessine en pointillés ? | Now brothers and sisters, what does our faithful heart say to us ? What is working invisibly in, under and through the visible form of the altar ? What is the drawing made by the dot lines ? |
| Dans la lumière récente de la Nativité, je suggèrerai la chose suivante : à l’autel se donne à voir l’amour de Dieu le Père pour sa création : l’autel, c’est la mangeoire de Noël par où repose le Verbe-fait-chair et c’est le tombeau de Pâques où la chair du Verbe est glorifiée : abaissement et exaltation. | In the light of the Nativity, I would suggest the following : we can see the love of God our Father for His Creation giving itself on the altar : the altar is the manger of Christmas where the Word becomes flesh and the tomb of Easter where the flesh of the Word is glorified : lowering and exaltation. |
| Comme l’écrit Jean l’Évangéliste : « Dieu a tant aimé le monde qu’il a envoyé son Fils pour que celui qui croit en lui ne meurt pas mais ait la vie éternelle » [3]. | As John the Evangelist puts it : « For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life [4] ». |

| ２そこで、シモン ペトロのところへ、また、イエスが愛しておられたもう一人の弟子のところへ走って行って彼らに告げた。「主が墓から取り去られました。どこに置かれているのか、わたしたちにはわかりません。」 | 2 Elle court, rejoint Simon-Pierre et l’autre disciple, celui que Jésus aimait, et elle leur dit : « On a enlevé du tombeau le Seigneur, et nous ne savons pas où on l’a mis. » | 2 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him. |
| ３そこで、ペトロとその一人の弟子は、外に出て墓へ行った。 | 3 Alors Pierre sortit, ainsi que l’autre disciple, et ils allèrent au tombeau. | 3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre. |
| ４二人は一緒に走ったが、もう一人の弟子のほうが、ペトロより早く走って、先に墓に着いた。 | 4 Ils couraient tous les deux ensemble, mais l’autre disciple courut plus vite que Pierre et arriva le premier au tombeau. | 4 So they ran both together : and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre. |
| ５身をかがめて中をのぞくと、亜麻布が置いてあった。しかし、彼は中には入らなかった。 | 5 Il se penche et voit les bandelettes qui étaient posées là. Toutefois il n’entra pas. | 5 And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying ; yet went he not in. |
| ６続いて、シモン ペトロも着いた。彼は墓に入り、亜麻布が置いてあるのを見た。 | 6 Arrive, à son tour, Simon-Pierre qui le suivait ; il entre dans le tombeau et considère les bandelettes posées là | 6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie, . |
| ７イエスの頭を包んでいた覆いは、亜麻布と同じ所には置いてなく、離れたところに丸めてあった。 | 7 et le linge qui avait recouvert la tête ; celui-ci n’avait pas été déposé avec les bandelettes, mais il était roulé à part, dans un autre endroit. | 7 And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. |
| ８それから、先に墓に着いたもう一人の弟子も入って来て、見て、信じた。 | 8 C’est alors que l’autre disciple, celui qui était arrivé le premier, entra à son tour dans le tombeau ; il vit et il crut. | 8 Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed. |
