Voir Matthieu 11, 2-11- See Matthew 11:2-11

Chers amis, aujourd’hui [1] mettons-nous à la place de Jean le Baptiste. Dans la prison inconfortable du roi Hérode, il aurait bien voulu connaître la libération des justes qui devait suivre l’arrivée du Messie. Qu’attendait Jésus pour instaurer définitivement et universellement le Règne de Dieu ? Dear friends, let us put ourselves today [2] in the place of John the Baptist. In the uncomfortable prison of the king Herod, he surely had yearned after the final liberation of the righteous supposedly following the coming of the Messiah. What was Jesus waiting for to establish once and for all the Kingdom of God ?
« Es-tu vraiment le Messie ? alors qu’attends-tu ? Pourquoi y-a-t-il encore du malheur et de l’injustice sur cette terre ? ». Cette question de Jean le Baptiste, les chrétiens se la sont posés vraisemblablement à toutes les époques. « Are you really the Messiah ? Then what are you waiting for ? Why is this Earth still plagued by injustice and unhappiness ? » Christians have probably asked themselves this question at all times.
Je crois que nous n’avons pas à la laisser occuper tout le champ de notre vision, pour ne pas risquer de désespérer de la bonté de l’humanité, de la création et de Dieu. I think we should avoid letting this question fill the whole field of our vision, for fear of losing faith in the goodness of mankind, of the Creation and of God.
Un dicton africain dit que l’arbre qui tombe fait beaucoup de bruit, mais que la forêt qui pousse ne fait pas de bruit. Notre foi va plus loin, qui soutient que Dieu ne se résigne pas à passer par pertes et profits l’arbre lui-même : Dieu a souci de l’arbre qui tombe et il ne laissera pas perdre aucun de ses bons fruits. There is an African saying which states that the falling tree makes lot of noise, but the forest grows in silence. Our faith goes further when saying that God is not resigned to write off the very tree : God cares for the falling tree and He will not let any of its good fruits be lost.
Alors oui, Dieu en son Fils fait homme guérit les boiteux, les aveugles, les sourds et ressuscite les morts. Non pas pour qu’ils rentrent dans la ronde d’un monde oublieux de sa dépendance envers un Autre, mais pour qu’ils puissent se rendre sur la montagne sainte au désert, là où le peuple de Dieu célèbrera le culte définitif qui plaît à Dieu. So yes, God cures in Christ the limp and the blind and the deaf and He raises the dead. Not for them to go around in circles like the world forgetting its dependence on another, but for them to be able to walk to the Holy Mountain where the people of God will celebrate the true service to God.
Mes amis, nous qui sommes nés une seconde fois du baptême dans l’Esprit, faisons ce que Jean le Baptiste ne pouvait pas faire, lui qui est mort avant que le Christ manifeste sa gloire sur la croix : traçons sur notre corps le signe de cette croix par laquelle le Christ meurt pour nos péchés et ressuscite pour notre vie éternelle. My friends, since we are born a second time through our baptism in the Holy Spirit, let us perform what John the Baptist could not do since he died before Christ revealed his glory : let us trace on our body the sign of the cross through which Christ dies for ours ins and is raised for our eternal life.
Que ce signe imprime en nous une blessure par laquelle entrera toujours plus la circulation d’amour des trois Personnes divines, la vie trinitaire. Amen. May this sign imprint in us a wound through which the love of the three divine Persons, the life of the Trinity will circulate more and more. Amen.

ヨハネは牢の中で、キリストのなさったことを聞いた。そこで、自分の弟子たちを送って、 2 Or Jean, dans sa prison, avait entendu parler des œuvres du Christ. Il lui envoya demander par ses disciples : Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
尋ねさせた。「来るべき方は、あなたでしょうか。それとも、ほかの方を待たなければなりませんか。」 3 « Es-tu ‹ Celui qui doit venir › ou devons-nous en attendre un autre ? » 3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another ?
イエスはお答えになった。「行って、見聞きしていることをヨハネに伝えなさい。 4 Jésus leur répondit : « Allez rapporter à Jean ce que vous entendez et voyez : 4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see :
目の見えない人は見え、足の不自由な人は歩き、重い皮膚病を患っている人は清くなり、耳の聞こえない人は聞こえ、死者は生き返り、貧しい人は福音を告げ知らされている。 5 les aveugles retrouvent la vue et les boiteux marchent droit, les lépreux sont purifiés et les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent et la Bonne Nouvelle est annoncée aux pauvres ; 5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
わたしにつまずかない人は幸いである。」 6 et heureux celui qui ne tombera pas à cause de moi ! » 6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
ヨハネの弟子たちが帰ると、イエスは群衆にヨハネについて話し始められた。「あなたがたは、何を見に荒れ野へ行ったのか。風にそよぐ葦か。 7 Comme ils s’en allaient, Jésus se mit à parler de Jean aux foules : « Qu’êtes-vous allés regarder au désert ? Un roseau secoué par le vent ? 7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see ? A reed shaken with the wind ?
では、何を見に行ったのか。しなやかな服を着た人か。しなやかな服を着た人なら王宮にいる。 8 Alors, qu’êtes-vous allés voir ? Un homme vêtu d’habits élégants ? Mais ceux qui portent des habits élégants sont dans les demeures des rois. 8 But what went ye out for to see ? A man clothed in soft raiment ? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses.
では、何を見に行ったのか。預言者か。そうだ。言っておく。預言者以上の者である。 9 Alors, qu’êtes-vous allés voir ? Un prophète ? Oui, je vous le déclare, et plus qu’un prophète. 9 But what went ye out for to see ? A prophet ? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
『見よ、わたしはあなたより先に使者を遣わし、／あなたの前に道を準備させよう』／と書いてあるのは、この人のことだ。 10 C’est celui dont il est écrit : Voici, j’envoie mon messager en avant de toi ; il préparera ton chemin devant toi. 10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
はっきり言っておく。およそ女から生まれた者のうち、洗礼者ヨハネより偉大な者は現れなかった。しかし、天の国で最も小さな者でも、彼よりは偉大である 11 En vérité, je vous le déclare, parmi ceux qui sont nés d’une femme, il ne s’en est pas levé de plus grand que Jean le Baptiste ; et cependant le plus petit dans le Royaume des cieux est plus grand que lui. 11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist : notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
