Mes amis, voilà quelqu’un, Hérodiade, qui a enfreint la loi et qui n’aime pas qu’on le lui reproche [1]. My friends, here is someone, Herodias, who has breached the law and doesn’t like being blamed for it [2].
Récemment, dans une laverie automatique, un père de famille a été roué de coups devant ses enfants parce qu’il avait demandé à une personne de mettre son masque. Comme Hérodiade, cette personne n’aimait pas qu’on lui reproche d’enfreindre la loi. Recently, in a laundromat, a father was beaten up in front of his children for asking someone to put on his mask. Like Herodias, this person did not like being accused of breaking the law
Nous-mêmes, nous n’aimons pas quand on nous fait des reproches justifiés, et nous avons tendance à réagir violemment, au moins avec la bouche à défaut de batte de baseball. We too hate being criticized for good reasons et we tend to react violently, with our lips if not with a baseball bat.
Qu’est-ce qui est en jeu dans cette violence ? Je ne suis pas formé en psychologie mais je vais tenter une réponse : le reproche est comme une épingle plantée dans le ballon de baudruche de notre ego, nous craignons l’effondrement de l’image de nous-mêmes, et la violence constitue alors une sorte de réaction de protection. What is at stake in this violence ? I am not trained in psychology but I will try to answer : the reproach is like a pin stuck in the balloon of our ego, we fear the collapse of the image of ourselves, and violence constitutes then a sort of protective reaction.
Comment ne pas avoir peur de perdre l’estime de soi et l’estime des autres ? comment savoir reconnaître ses torts, comment lutter contre une susceptibilité qui nous fait réagir de manière excessive ? How not to be afraid of losing self-esteem and the esteem of others ? How to be able to recognize humbly our faults, how to fight against a susceptibility that makes us overreact ?
Pour répondre, je passe du domaine de la psychologie à celui de la religion : il faut construire l’estime de soi sur quelque chose de solide, qui ne dépend pas du regard des autres ni de son propre regard. To answer, I quit the realm of psychology for that of religion : you have to build your self-esteem on something solid, which does not depend on the gaze of others or on your own gaze.
Ce regard, c’est celui du Père qui sait que nous pouvons être plus grands que nos mesquineries, c’est celui de Jésus qui meurt sur la croix pour nous rendre capables d’obéir à la Loi de l’amour. This gaze is that of the Father who knows that we can be greater than our meanness, it is that of Jesus who dies on the cross to make us capable of obeying the Law of love.

イエスの名が知れ渡ったので、ヘロデ王の耳にも入った。人々は言っていた。「洗礼者ヨハネが死者の中から生き返ったのだ。だから、奇跡を行う力が彼に働いている。」 14 Le roi Hérode entendit parler de Jésus, car son nom était devenu célèbre. On disait : « Jean le Baptiste est ressuscité des morts ; voilà pourquoi le pouvoir de faire des miracles agit en lui. » 14 And king Herod heard of him ; (for his name was spread abroad :) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
そのほかにも、「彼はエリヤだ」と言う人もいれば、「昔の預言者のような預言者だ」と言う人もいた。 15 D’autres disaient : « C’est Elie. » D’autres disaient : « C’est un prophète semblable à l’un de nos prophètes. » 15 Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.
ところが、ヘロデはこれを聞いて、「わたしが首をはねたあのヨハネが、生き返ったのだ」と言った。 16 Entendant ces propos, Hérode disait : « Ce Jean que j’ai fait décapiter, c’est lui qui est ressuscité. » 16 But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded : he is risen from the dead.
実は、ヘロデは、自分の兄弟フィリポの妻ヘロディアと結婚しており、そのことで人をやってヨハネを捕らえさせ、牢につないでいた。 17 En effet, Hérode avait fait arrêter Jean et l’avait enchaîné en prison, à cause d’Hérodiade, la femme de son frère Philippe, qu’il avait épousée. 17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife : for he had married her.
ヨハネが、「自分の兄弟の妻と結婚することは、律法で許されていない」とヘロデに言ったからである。 18 Car Jean disait à Hérode : « Il ne t’est pas permis de garder la femme de ton frère. » 18 For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.
そこで、ヘロディアはヨハネを恨み、彼を殺そうと思っていたが、できないでいた。 19 Aussi, Hérodiade le haïssait et voulait le faire mourir, mais elle ne le pouvait pas, 19 Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him ; but she could not :
なぜなら、ヘロデが、ヨハネは正しい聖なる人であることを知って、彼を恐れ、保護し、また、その教えを聞いて非常に当惑しながらも、なお喜んで耳を傾けていたからである。 20 car Hérode craignait Jean, sachant que c’était un homme juste et saint, et il le protégeait. Quand il l’avait entendu, il restait fort perplexe ; cependant il l’écoutait volontiers. 20 For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him ; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.
ところが、良い機会が訪れた。ヘロデが、自分の誕生日の祝いに高官や将校、ガリラヤの有力者などを招いて宴会を催すと、 21 Mais un jour propice arriva lorsque Hérode, pour son anniversaire, donna un banquet à ses dignitaires, à ses officiers et aux notables de Galilée. 21 And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee ;
ヘロディアの娘が入って来て踊りをおどり、ヘロデとその客を喜ばせた。そこで、王は少女に、「欲しいものがあれば何でも言いなさい。お前にやろう」と言い、 22 La fille de cette Hérodiade vint exécuter une danse et elle plut à Hérode et à ses convives. Le roi dit à la jeune fille : « Demande-moi ce que tu veux et je te le donnerai. » 22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.
更に、「お前が願うなら、この国の半分でもやろう」と固く誓ったのである。 23 Et il lui fit ce serment : « Tout ce que tu me demanderas, je te le donnerai, serait-ce la moitié de mon royaume. » 23 And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.
少女が座を外して、母親に、「何を願いましょうか」と言うと、母親は、「洗礼者ヨハネの首を」と言った。 24 Elle sortit et dit à sa mère : « Que vais-je demander ? » Celle-ci répondit : « La tête de Jean le Baptiste. » 24 And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask ? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.
早速、少女は大急ぎで王のところに行き、「今すぐに洗礼者ヨハネの首を盆に載せて、いただきとうございます」と願った。 25 En toute hâte, elle rentra auprès du roi et lui demanda : « Je veux que tu me donnes tout de suite sur un plat la tête de Jean le Baptiste. » 25 And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.
王は非常に心を痛めたが、誓ったことではあるし、また客の手前、少女の願いを退けたくなかった。 26 Le roi devint triste, mais, à cause de son serment et des convives, il ne voulut pas lui refuser. 26 And the king was exceeding sorry ; yet for his oath’s sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.
そこで、王は衛兵を遣わし、ヨハネの首を持って来るようにと命じた。衛兵は出て行き、牢の中でヨハネの首をはね、 27 Aussitôt le roi envoya un garde avec l’ordre d’apporter la tête de Jean. Le garde alla le décapiter dans sa prison, 27 And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought : and he went and beheaded him in the prison,
盆に載せて持って来て少女に渡し、少女はそれを母親に渡した。 28 il apporta la tête sur un plat, il la donna à la jeune fille, et la jeune fille la donna à sa mère. 28 And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel : and the damsel gave it to her mother.
ヨハネの弟子たちはこのことを聞き、やって来て、遺体を引き取り、墓に納めた。 29 Quand ils l’eurent appris, les disciples de Jean vinrent prendre son cadavre et le déposèrent dans un tombeau. 29 And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.
