| Mes amis, en méditant les Béatitudes de l’évangile de Luc [1], je me suis demandé qui était l’homme le plus heureux du monde. Et la réponse m’a semblé évidente : Jésus est l’homme le plus heureux du monde. | My friends, while meditating on the Beatitudes of Luke’s Gospel [2], I asked myself who was the happiest man in the world. And the answer seemed obvious to me : Jesus is the happiest man in the world. |
| Cette affirmation paraît paradoxale à vue humaine : Jésus a abandonné son métier, sa situation sociale, la possibilité de fonder un foyer, tout cela pour partir en pauvre sur les routes. Sur la croix, il a crié « J’ai soif » avant de mourir, abandonné par ses disciples, son corps nu et meurtri offert aux quolibets de la foule. Et sans doute a-t-il pleuré sur les professionnels de la religion et de la politique que leur cœur endurci avait rendu imperméables à la Parole de Dieu. | This statement seems paradoxical from a human point of view : Jesus gave up his job, his social situation, the possibility of having a home, all of this to depart as a poor man on the road.
