Today [2], we celebrate the birth of a child, and we have plenty of reasons to rejoice. A child is a source of life, of freshness, it is a little being full of energy who explorers the world to discover its riches, its wonders.
And it is also a source of questions and hope : what will become of this little boy, this little girl ? How will they respond in their own way to the enigma of the human condition ? How will they exercise their role as a man, as a woman ? What will the do with their freedom ? Will they know how to be happy ?
That’s why I think it’s a good thing that there’s a crèche or a primary school next to an old people’s home : the cries of children at playtime remind the old people that life is not only declining but also arising, and that it will continue after them. And young children can learn from the elderly, with their white hair, their wrinkled skin, their difficulty in walking. They can learn from them what it is to last in time, they learn faithfulness and constancy in the ups and downs of life.
But Jesus is not only a child of this earth, he is human and also divine.
So, of course, like all births, his birth brings something new, but something new like we have never seen before and we will never see again.
After all, we can fall into the stale talk of the disillusioned man like Macbeth, the main character in Shakespeare’s play of the same name :
“Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.”
“Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.”
“Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.”
"Are you searching for the meaning of life ? Don’t bother : there isn’t one." A simplistic answer from a man who succumbed to vertigo when faced with the abyss of nothingness, death, and evil.
» [4]. A hollow response, in fact, that a child’s simple cry of wonder is enough to return it to the emptiness to which it belongs :”LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth ! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger [5]].
And the adversary is definitively broken when it is the mouth of the baby Jesus that speaks.
The birth of Jesus belies this disillusioned statement. Macbeth is mistaken, life has a meaning : it is directed towards a marvellous horizon, life with God, life in God, life of God : God becomes man so that we may become God.
Now our life, and all life, is no longer condemned to insignificance and mediocrity, it can be transfigured into something so great and so intense that we cannot imagine it.
I will conclude with another vertigo, opposite to the previous one and infinitely greater than it.
You are walking in the countryside of Burgundy on a summer evening. You look up and discover an infinite dome above you, dotted with stars. You feel dizzy, as if you were going to fall into the sky, as if the sky were sucking you in.
The Word, by becoming man, makes the believer a participant in the divine life, he opens up Heaven to us. And what vertigo seizes us at this thought !
Yes, we have many reasons to rejoice : a Child is born to us, and what a Child !

Évangile de Jean 1, 1-18 - Gospel by John 1, 1-18

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 Il était au commencement tourné vers Dieu. . 2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 Tout fut par lui, et rien de ce qui fut, ne fut sans lui. 3 All things were made by him ; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 En lui était la vie et la vie était la lumière des hommes, 4 In him was life ; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness ; and the darkness comprehended it not. comprehended : or, did not admit, or, receive
6 Il y eut un homme, envoyé de Dieu : son nom était Jean 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John
. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name : power : or, the right, or, privilege
13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
» 15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me : for he was before me.
16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
18 Personne n’a jamais vu Dieu ; Dieu Fils unique, qui est dans le sein du Père, nous l’a dévoilé 18 No man hath seen God at any time ; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
