« Consacre les par la vérité ». Cette parole de Jésus m’a fait réfléchir à ce qu’est la vérité et ce que veut dire « consacrer » dans le christianisme. « Consecrate them through the truth”. Yhis word of Jesus made me think about what truth is in Christianity, and what it means to consecrate.
– Ponce Pilate posait mal la question quand il demandait à Jésus : « La vérité, c’est quoi ? ». La bonne question était : « La vérité, c’est qui ? ». Pour le disciple du Christ, la vérité est une personne, le Messie, le Christ, l’Oint de Dieu et non pas une chose ou une doctrine. Jésus l’a dit lui-même : « Je suis le chemin, la vérité et la vie ». Pontius Pilate asked the wrong question : "What is the truth ? The right question was : "Who is the truth ? For the follower of Christ, the truth is a person, the Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed One of God, and not a thing or a speech. Jesus said it himself : "I am the way, the truth and the life".
Il est bon de se le rappeler en ce jour où l’Eglise célèbre l’un des plus grands théologiens de l’Église catholique, Thomas d’Aquin [1]. It is good to be reminded on this day when the Church celebrates Thomas Aquinas [2].
Je suis entré dans l’Ordre des prêcheurs à cause de ma profonde admiration pour la clarté et la rigueur de la pensée thomasienne, mais je n’y serais pas resté juste pour cette raison. J’y suis resté depuis maintenant vingt ans parce que j’ai rencontré Celui dont parlait la Somme théologique de Thomas d’Aquin . I entered the Order of Preachers because of my deep admiration for the clarity and rigour of Thomasian thought, but I would not have stayed in it for now twenty years just for this reason. I stayed because I have met the One of whom the Summa theologica was speaking.
Nous pouvons posséder une chose ou une doctrine, nous ne pouvons pas posséder une personne, et a fortiori la personne du Christ, à la fois historique (elle s’est manifestée historiquement à un moment du temps) mais aussi trans- et méta-historique (elle continue d’accompagner chaque jour de notre histoire tout en les dépassant). We can possess a thing or a doctrine, we cannot possess a person, and a fortiori the person of Christ, both historical (he manifested himself historically at a moment in time) but also trans- and meta-historical (he continues to accompany every day of our history while exceeding them).
Nous ne possédons pas la vérité, c’est plutôt elle qui nous possède, si nous acceptons de vivre d’elle, en elle et pour elle. We do not possess the truth, rather it possesses us, if we accept to live from it, in it and for it.
– Passons au mot « consacrer ». D’après le dictionnaire grec du Nouveau testament, il signifie « mettre de côté, à part » et aussi « purifier ». Let us turn to the word "consecrate". According to the Greek dictionary of the New Testament, it means "to set apart" and also "to purify".
Les baptisés sont mis à part pour servir le Dieu trinitaire et pour se tenir en sa présence : le baptême consacre les baptisés qui ne sont plus de ce monde en ce qu’ils participent d’une réalité divine au-delà de l’ordre du créé. The baptized are set apart to serve the Triune God and to stand in his presence : baptism consecrates the baptized who are no longer of this world insofar as they participate in a divine reality beyond the created order.
Nous disons bien : « Les baptisés sont consacrés » à Dieu et à son service, et non pas : « Les baptisés se consacrent » à Dieu et à son service. C’est Dieu qui réalise la consécration d’hommes et de femmes qui, relevant de l’ordre créé, ne peuvent prétendre à avoir part par eux même à la réalité incréée. We say : "The baptized are consecrated" to God and to his service, not : "The baptized consecrate themselves" to God and to his service. It is God who carries out the consecration of men and women : since they belong to the created order, they cannot pretend to have by themselves a share in the uncreated reality.
Un seul homme peut conjuguer le verbe consacrer à la forme active : Jésus seul peut dire : « Je me consacre à Dieu », parce que vrai homme, il est tout autant vrai Dieu. Only one man can conjugate the verb consecrate in the active form : only Jesus can say, "I consecrate myself to God," because he is true man and true God.
Cela ne veut pas dire que les baptisés subissent passivement la consécration : ils devront laisser se déployer la triple dynamique qui les anime depuis leur baptême, celle de la foi, de l’espérance et de la charité – et en ce sens, ils peuvent eux aussi dire à la suite du Christ : « Je me consacre » à Dieu et à son service [3]. This does not mean that the baptized passively undergo the consecration : they must allow the threefold dynamic of faith, hope and charity received at their baptism to unfold - and in this sense, they too can say, following Christ : "I consecrate myself" to God and to his service. [4].
Pour le dire en termes scolastiques, la consécration est inscrite « en puissance » dans le baptisé, elle doit ensuite se déployer « en acte » dans l’histoire des baptisés, et cela suppose une purification, une conversion opérée certes par la grâce divine, avec l’assentiment de la volonté humaine. To put it in scholastic terms, consecration is inscribed "in potential" in the baptized person ; it must then unfold "in act" in the history of the baptized, and this presupposes a purification, a conversion operated by divine grace, with the consent of the human will.
Signalons une autre équivoque du mot « consécration ». Let us note another equivocation of the word "consecration".
Du fait de leur consécration, les baptisés, peuvent se croire au-dessus du monde, séparés de lui [5]. Ce serait se tromper sur la volonté de Dieu : quand Dieu consacre des hommes et des femmes, c’est pour atteindre le reste des hommes à travers eux, c’est pour consacrer l’humanité entière, et à travers elle, la création entière. Because of their consecration, the baptized, may believe themselves above the world, separated from it [6]. This would be to misunderstand God’s will : when God consecrates men and women, it is to reach out to the rest of mankind through them, it is to consecrate the whole of humanity, and through it, the whole of creation.
Ainsi, juste après avoir demandé à son Père de consacrer ses disciples en lui, Jésus ajoute : « Comme tu m’as envoyé dans le monde, moi aussi je les envoie dans le monde » Thus, just after asking his Father to consecrate his disciples in him, Jesus adds : "As you sent me into the world, so I send them into the world"
Ce double mouvement, vertical avec la consécration à Dieu, et horizontal avec l’envoi dans le monde, je le retrouve dans la complémentarité de la doctrine de Thomas d’Aquin et de celle de l’autre grand théologien latin, Augustin. I find this double movement, vertical with the consecration to God, and horizontal with the sending out into the world, in the complementarity of the doctrine of Thomas Aquinas and that of the other great Latin theologian, Augustine.
Augustin a acclimaté en régime chrétien la pensée platonicienne. Cette pensée privilégie le monde incorruptible et éternel des idées sur notre monde sublunaire changeant, corruptible, rempli de déclinaisons imparfaites des paradigmes célestes [7]. Augustine acclimatised Platonic thought to the Christian regime. This thought privileges the incorruptible and eternal world of ideas over our changing, corruptible sublunary world, full of imperfect declensions of the heavenly paradigms [8].
Huit cent ans plus tard, Thomas a acclimaté un autre grand philosophe païen, Aristote. Thomas a trouvé dans la philosophie aristotélicienne les ressources pour conceptualiser la consistance du monde, ressources absentes de l’idéalisme platonicien. Eight hundred years later, Thomas acclimatised another great pagan philosopher, Aristotle. Thomas found in Aristotelian philosophy the resources to conceptualise the consistency of the world, which was missing in Platonic idealism.
En régime chrétien, le monde a une consistance parce que Dieu a voulu une création qui se tient en face de lui, belle, sans tâche et libre, c’est-à-dire capable de répondre à son amour. In the Christian view, the world is consistent because God wanted a creation that stands before him, beautiful, unblemished and free, that is, capable of responding to his love.
Et c’est pour relancer ce projet barré par la faute originelle que Jésus Christ se consacre sur la croix, et nous avec lui. And it is to relaunch this project, blocked by the original sin, that Jesus Christ consecrates himself on the cross, and us with him.

Père saint, garde-les en ton nom que tu m’as donné, pour qu’ils soient un comme nous sommes un. 11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
わたしは彼らと一緒にいる間、あなたが与えてくださった御名によって彼らを守りました。わたしが保護したので、滅びの子のほかは、だれも滅びませんでした。聖書が実現するためです。 12 Lorsque j’étais avec eux, je les gardais en ton nom que tu m’as donné ; je les ai protégés et aucun d’eux ne s’est perdu, sinon le fils de perdition, en sorte que l’Écriture soit accomplie. 12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name : those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition ; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
しかし、今、わたしはみもとに参ります。世にいる間に、これらのことを語るのは、わたしの喜びが彼らの内に満ちあふれるようになるためです。 13 Maintenant je vais à toi et je dis ces paroles dans le monde pour qu’ils aient en eux ma joie dans sa plénitude. 13 And now come I to thee ; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
わたしは彼らに御言葉を伝えましたが、世は彼らを憎みました。わたしが世に属していないように、彼らも世に属していないからです。 14 Je leur ai donné ta parole, et le monde les a haïs, parce qu’ils ne sont pas du monde, comme je ne suis pas du monde. 14 I have given them thy word ; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
わたしがお願いするのは、彼らを世から取り去ることではなく、悪い者から守ってくださることです。 15 Je ne te demande pas de les ôter du monde, mais de les garder du Mauvais. 15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
わたしが世に属していないように、彼らも世に属していないのです。 16 Ils ne sont pas du monde comme je ne suis pas du monde. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
真理によって、彼らを聖なる者としてください。あなたの御言葉は真理です。 17 Consacre-les par la vérité : ta parole est vérité. 17 Sanctify them through thy truth : thy word is truth.
わたしを世にお遣わしになったように、わたしも彼らを世に遣わしました。 18 Comme tu m’as envoyé dans le monde, je les envoie dans le monde. 18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
彼らのために、わたしは自分自身をささげます。彼らも、真理によってささげられた者となるためです。 19 Et pour eux je me consacre moi-même, afin qu’ils soient eux aussi consacrés par la vérité. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

[3] La consécration ne se réduit pas à l’acte inaugural du baptême : la consécration court tout au long de la vie des baptisés dans la mesure où ceux-ci inscrivent dans leur vie la dynamique triple de la foi, de l’espérance et de la charité.

[4] Consecration cannot be reduced to the inaugural act of baptism : consecration runs throughout the life of the baptized insofar as they inscribe in their lives the threefold dynamic of faith, hope and charity.

[5] Le mot « pharisien » se traduit de fait par « séparé » : du fait de leur pratique rigoureuse de la Torah, les Pharisiens se sentaient « séparés » du reste des Juifs et ils méprisaient le petit peuple ignorant.

[6] The word "Pharisee" is in fact translated as "separated" : because of their rigorous practice of the Torah, the Pharisees felt "separated" from the rest of the Jews and they despised the ignorant little people.
