| Dans l’évangile d’aujourd’hui [1], Jésus affirme qu’il est le chemin unique vers le Père. L’affirmation va à l’encontre d’une idée répandue selon laquelle l’absolu serait comme le sommet d’une montagne et les religions comme des chemins y menant. Selon cette idée, les chemins se vaudraient tous dans la mesure où tous mènent au sommet et aucun ne pourrait prétendre à l’exclusivité. | In today’s Gospel [2], Jesus affirms that he is the only way to the Father. This statement goes against the widespread idea that the absolute is like the top of a mountain and that religions are like paths leading to it. According to this idea, all paths are equal in that they all lead to the summit and none can claim exclusivity. |

| Soyons cependant vigilants dans notre lecture : c’est le Christ qui est le chemin vers le Père, et non le christianisme ou l’Église catholique. L’Église catholique a reçu du Christ l’intégralité de l’appareil sacramentaire, il l’a dotée d’une structure hiérarchique et charismatique, elle est une réalité humano-divine, mais elle n’épuise pas la totalité de l’Église (entendue ici comme le Corps mystique du Christ) qui subsiste en elle. Si le christianisme balise le chemin en disant ce qu’il faut croire et faire (dogmes et morale), il n’est pas la réalité vivante du Christ ressuscité qui accompagne et inspire son Église à chaque instant dans sa marche vers le Royaume. | Let us be vigilant in our reading, however : Christ is the way to the Father, not Christianity or the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church has received from Christ the entire sacramental apparatus, Christ has endowed it with a hierarchical and charismatic structure, it is a human-divine reality, but the Catholic Church does not exhaust the totality of the Church (understood here as the Mystical Body of Christ) which subsists in it. If Christianity points the way by saying what must be believed and done (dogmas and morals), it is not the living reality of the risen Christ who accompanies and inspires his Church at every moment in its march towards the Kingdom. |
| La comparaison m’inspire une autre remarque. Dieu n’est pas au bout de nos efforts, il n’est pas comparable à un sommet qu’on atteint avec un bon matériel, une bonne technique et une bonne condition physique. En fait, aucune comparaison tirée de l’ordre du créé ne peut rendre compte d’un Dieu qui n’en relève pas puisqu’il en est le Créateur. Je ne crois pas pouvoir atteindre les demeures célestes par moi-même : j’ai besoin que le Christ vienne me chercher pour m’y emmener. | The comparison inspires me to make another remark. God is not at the end of our efforts, he is not comparable to a summit that can be reached with good equipment, good technique and good physical condition. In fact, no comparison drawn from the order of the created can account for a God who does not belong to it since he is the Creator. I do not believe I can reach the heavenly mansions by myself : I need Christ to come and take me there. |
| Je crois que seul le Christ seul nous permet d’aller vers Dieu, parce que lui seul, en tant que vrai homme et vrai Dieu, se tient à la fois du côté de l’ordre du créé et de l’ordre incréé. Il est l’unique médiateur entre la création et le Créateur [3] et nul ne peut aller vers le Père sans passer par lui. | I believe that Christ alone enables us to go to God, because he alone, as true man and true God, stands on the side of both the created and the uncreated order. | Et cela m’amène à une troisième et dernière remarque : il nous faut marcher sur le chemin, non pas pour atteindre son terme mais pour être transformés, convertis par lui. | And this leads me to a third and final remark : we must walk the path, not to reach its end but to be transformed, converted by it. |
| Et à un moment donné, tel notre Maître, nous serons emportés au ciel. | And at some point, like our Master, we will be taken to heaven. |

Voilà ce qui est beau et agréable aux yeux de Dieu notre Sauveur, qui veut que tous les hommes soient sauvés et parviennent à la connaissance de la vérité. Car il n’y a qu’un seul Dieu, un seul médiateur aussi entre Dieu et les hommes, un homme : Christ Jésus, qui s’est donné en rançon pour tous.
Le Christ est la porte donnant sur le créé et l’incréé : voir Jean 10,9-10 :
Je suis la porte : si quelqu’un entre par moi, il sera sauvé, il ira et viendra et trouvera de quoi se nourrir.
