Aujourd’hui [1], je voudrais vous parler d’une vertu humaine fondamentale pour qui veut faire la volonté de Dieu et par là devenir saint : l’humilité. Today [2], I would like to speak to you about a fundamental human virtue for those who wish to do God’s will and thereby become saints : humility.
L’être humain humble permet à Dieu d’exprimer plus pleinement sa puissance de vie, de résurrection. C’est parce que Moïse était humble que Dieu a pu en faire le libérateur et le guide de son peuple. C’est parce que Marie était humble que le Verbe a pu prendre chair en elle. Humble human beings allow God to express more fully his power of life and resurrection. It was because Moses was humble that God was able to make him the liberator and guide of his people. It was because Mary was humble that the Word was able to take flesh in her.

Si j’ai bien compris, cette limitation n’est pas du fait de Dieu mais du nôtre, du fait de notre nature faussée depuis le péché originel : les grâces divines peuvent être détournées pour nourrir notre volonté propre et nous centrer encore plus sur nous-mêmes, au lieu de nous décentrer et de nous faire chercher d’abord la volonté de Dieu. Mais Pierre humilié n’est pas encore Pierre humble, il lui faudra faire l’expérience de la main tendue du Christ par-delà la mort. But the humiliated Peter is not yet the humble Peter ; he will have to experience Christ’s outstretched hand beyond death.
Pierre aura alors fait l’expérience et de sa toute-impuissance et de la toute-puissance du Christ. Peter will have experienced both his own omnipotence and the omnipotence of Christ.
À la tristesse de l’humiliation succédera la joie de l’humilité, la joie même de Jésus, le serviteur parfaitement humble dont la volonté était de faire entièrement et sans reste celle de son Père. The sadness of humiliation will be followed by the joy of humility, the very joy of Jesus, the perfectly humble servant whose will was to do entirely and without rest that of his Father.

群衆を解散させてから、祈るためにひとり山にお登りになった。夕方になっても、ただひとりそこにおられた。 23 Et, après avoir renvoyé les foules, il monta dans la montagne pour prier à l’écart. Le soir venu, il était là, seul. 23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray : and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
ところが、舟は既に陸から何スタディオンか離れており、逆風のために波に悩まされていた。 24 La barque se trouvait déjà à plusieurs centaines de mètres de la terre ; elle était battue par les vagues, le vent étant contraire. 24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves : for the wind was contrary.
夜が明けるころ、イエスは湖の上を歩いて弟子たちのところに行かれた。 25 Vers la fin de la nuit, il vint vers eux en marchant sur la mer. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
弟子たちは、イエスが湖上を歩いておられるのを見て、「幽霊だ」と言っておびえ、恐怖のあまり叫び声をあげた。 26 En le voyant marcher sur la mer, les disciples furent affolés : « C’est un fantôme », disaient-ils, et, de peur, ils poussèrent des cris. 26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit ; and they cried out for fear.
イエスはすぐ彼らに話しかけられた。「安心しなさい。わたしだ。恐れることはない。」 27 Mais aussitôt, Jésus leur parla : « Confiance, c’est moi, n’ayez pas peur ! » 27But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer ; it is I ; be not afraid.
すると、ペトロが答えた。「主よ、あなたでしたら、わたしに命令して、水の上を歩いてそちらに行かせてください。」 28 S’adressant à lui, Pierre lui dit : « Seigneur, si c’est bien toi, ordonne-moi de venir vers toi sur les eaux. » - 28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
イエスが「来なさい」と言われたので、ペトロは舟から降りて水の上を歩き、イエスの方へ進んだ。 29 « Viens », dit-il. Et Pierre, descendu de la barque, marcha sur les eaux et alla vers Jésus. 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
しかし、強い風に気がついて怖くなり、沈みかけたので、「主よ、助けてください」と叫んだ。 30 Mais, en voyant le vent, il eut peur et, commençant à couler, il s’écria : « Seigneur, sauve-moi ! » 30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid ; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. boisterous : or, strong
イエスはすぐに手を伸ばして捕まえ、「信仰の薄い者よ、なぜ疑ったのか」と言われた。 31 Aussitôt, Jésus, tendant la main, le saisit en lui disant : « Homme de peu de foi, pourquoi as-tu douté ? » 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt ?
そして、二人が舟に乗り込むと、風は静まった。 32 Et quand ils furent montés dans la barque, le vent tomba. 32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
舟の中にいた人たちは、「本当に、あなたは神の子です」と言ってイエスを拝んだ。 33 Ceux qui étaient dans la barque se prosternèrent devant lui et lui dirent : « Vraiment, tu es Fils de Dieu ! » 33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
こうして、一行は湖を渡り、ゲネサレトという土地に着いた。 34 Après la traversée, ils touchèrent terre à Gennésareth. 34 And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.
土地の人々は、イエスだと知って、付近にくまなく触れ回った。それで、人々は病人を皆イエスのところに連れて来て、 35 Les gens de cet endroit le reconnurent, firent prévenir toute la région, et on lui amena tous les malades. 35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased ;
その服のすそにでも触れさせてほしいと願った。触れた者は皆いやされた。 36 On le suppliait de les laisser seulement toucher la frange de son vêtement ; et tous ceux qui la touchèrent furent sauvés. 36 And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment : and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
