L’évangile d’aujourd’hui [1] s’inscrit à la suite de la solennité du Christ roi de l’univers qui nous projette à la fin des temps, ou plus exactement à leur accomplissement. Les évangiles nous présentent le plus souvent la fin des temps sous la forme d’un combat avec les dernières puissances ennemis, d’où des images violentes et - pourrait-on dire - comme hallucinées du Livre de Daniel pour l’Ancien testament ou de l’Apocalypse selon saint Jean du Nouveau testament. Today’s Gospel [2] follows on from the Solemnity of Christ the King, which projects us to the end of time, or more precisely to its fulfillment. The Gospels most often present the end of time to us in the form of a battle with the last enemy powers, hence the violent and, one might say, hallucinatory images of the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament or in the Revelation according to Saint John in the New Testament.

These images can be frightening, and in fact, this emotion is useful in helping us break out of our selfish habits. I remember a plane trip where we were shaken so badly that my imagination, always quick to imagine the worst, showed me the plane crashing to the ground. I then promised to be kind if I survived the trip. The plane arrived at its destination safely, and I was kind for two or three weeks before my old routine took over again. That said, the experience was not in vain, as it reminded me that I was mortal, that everything that seemed obvious and taken for granted was not, and that there would be an end to my life on earth.
L’évangile d’aujourd’hui donne une description plus paisible de l’accomplissement des temps. Ici, l’avènement en gloire du Christ, la parousie, est comparée à l’arrivée progressive et inéluctable de l’été. Déployons la parabole. Today’s Gospel gives a more peaceful description of the fulfillment of time. Here, Christ’s glorious coming, the parousia, is compared to the gradual and inevitable arrival of summer. Le mot « été » dérive du latin Aestas qui signifie chaleur [3]. Au fur et à mesure que le solstice d’été approche, les jours rallongent [4], la terre reçoit plus de lumière et de chaleur, et la vie qui y est enfouie sort de son sommeil pour germer, fleurir et enfin fructifier. The word ”été” (French for "summer") derives from the Latin Aestas, which means heat [5]. As the summer solstice approaches, the days grow longer [6], the ground receives more light and heat, and the life buried within it awakens from its slumber to sprout, blossom, and finally bear fruit.
La parousie du Christ, le déploiement total et universel de sa puissance de résurrection serait comme un jour de plein été, où la lumière et la chaleur atteindraient leur maximum, tandis que le froid et les ténèbres auraient disparu [7]. La création de son côté s’inclinerait pour toujours plus recevoir la chaleur et la lumière qui rayonnent de Dieu et de l’Agneau. The parousia of Christ, the total and universal unfolding of his power of resurrection, would be like a midsummer day, when light and heat reach their maximum, while cold and darkness have disappeared [8]. Creation, for its part, would bow down to receive ever more of the warmth and light that radiate from God and the Lamb.
Ce jour serait précédé par un travail au début invisible, souterrain, où ce qui a été semé de bon par Dieu s’éveillerait et se mettrait à croître jusqu’à produire les beaux et bons fruits qui plaisent à Dieu. This day would be preceded by a work that is initially invisible and underground, where what God has sown for good would awaken and begin to grow until it produced beautiful and good fruit that pleases God.
Et pour nous qui confessons Jésus Christ comme notre maître, nous serions dans la période de grâce pendant laquelle la graine reçue au baptême, avec ses trois puissances, foi, espérance et charité, se développerait sous l’action de l’Esprit de feu jusqu’à remplir tout notre être. Nous deviendrions alors capable de plaire à Dieu sans réserve – et nous pourrions entrer dans la vie éternelle. And for us who confess Jesus Christ as our master, we would be in the period of grace during which the seed received at baptism, with its three powers, faith, hope, and charity, would develop under the action of the Spirit of fire until it filled our whole being. We would then become capable of pleasing God without reserve—and we could enter into eternal life.
Concluons. Que la venue en gloire du Christ soit représentée sous la forme d’un combat violent contre tout ce qui résiste à sa venue ou comme un processus de fructification progressif et continu, le message est le même : l’avènement du Christ est inéluctable, alors préparons nous à cet évènement qui sera d’ampleur cosmique – et en disant cela, nous n’avons encore rien dit. Let us conclude. Whether Christ’s coming in glory is represented as a violent battle against everything that resists his coming or as a gradual and continuous process of fruition, the message is the same : Christ’s coming is inevitable, so let us prepare ourselves for this event of cosmic proportions—and in saying this, we have not yet said anything.
Personnellement, je me rappelle un dimanche de Pâques célébré dans l’église des moines de la Pierre-Qui-Vire à Saint-Léger-Vauban (Yonne, France) où j’étais persuadé que le Christ allait venir à l’instant frapper à la porte, entre toutes les choses nouvelles qu’Il allait faire à la fin des temps. Personally, I remember an Easter Sunday celebrated in the monks’ church of the Pierre-Qui-Vire in Saint-Léger-Vauban (Yonne, France), where I was convinced that Christ was about to come and knock on the door, among all the new things He was going to do at the end of time.
