1. The Hope of the Jewish People in the Time of Jesus
“For you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your faithful one see the pit. You make me know the path of life ; in your presence there is fullness of joy ; at your right hand are pleasures for evermore” [4].
1§ The psalmist places his trust and hope in God. It is God, and not idols, who guides him on this earth and spares him the torments of death [5].
2§ In Jesus’ time, the Jews were awaiting the deliverance of Israel. This is what Jesus’ two disciples, on their way to Emmaus, would say to their mysterious companion : they had seen in Jesus the Messiah who was to deliver Israel, but this had not come to pass and he had died on the cross ; their hope had vanished and they were returning home.
3§ This concrete hope was that of the people of a small country oppressed by its neighbouring polytheistic empires : the empires of Mesopotamia, including Assyria, which had deported the Northern Kingdom, then Babylon, which had deported the elite of the Southern Kingdom and destroyed the First Temple in Jerusalem ; the Hellenistic empire of the Seleucids and now the Roman Empire [6]. Collective hope looks forward to the advent of God’s definitive reign over the world, the establishment of eternal peace and the restoration of Israel’s right over all nations, which must convert to the one true God.
4§ This hope also encompasses the individual deliverance of the righteous person, surrounded by wicked people who mock him when they are not seeking to kill him : “You do not eat with us for fear of defiling yourself,” you say, “and you refuse to marry your daughters and sons to our children ; you look with contempt upon our sacred statues and refuse to take part in the festivals of the city’s gods. Who do you think you are ?’ they say, expressing their incomprehension, if not their rejection.
5§ The psalmist identifies with this righteous person who has but one recourse left : the Lord : “I am surrounded by ferocious beasts that seek to tear me apart ; I have no hope left but in you.” From a human perspective, the righteous man is about to be killed and the wicked man will prevail ; only God can save him.
6§ Such was the hope of the Jews in Jesus’ time, a hope shared by Jesus’ disciples, who were also Jews. Christ will indeed bring about deliverance, but on a far broader and deeper scale than that expected by his contemporaries.
2. Hope in a Godless World
7§ In our secularised world, which seeks to build itself without any transcendent reference point, without God, hope no longer rests on the intervention of an external force but on nations and international organisations at the collective level, and on personal effort at the individual level.
8§ However, this hope is situated within a closed world, with death as the ultimate horizon at the individual level.
The Choice of Decency
9§ In a godless world where death is the insurmountable horizon, a primary existential attitude will be to wish to lead a dignified life in order to leave behind the memory of an honourable man or woman. Such was the view of the ancient Greeks, who certainly believed that the dead continued to live in the underworld of Hades, but a life devoid of joy and colour : it was in this life that one had to seek glory and honour, which alone were imperishable.
10§ An echo of this conception of life can be found in the Epic of Gilgamesh, a text dating from more than two thousand years before Christ. Gilgamesh is a legendary king of Uruk in Mesopotamia who sets out on a quest for immortality. He meets an immortal sage who reveals to him that there is no escape from death for human beings. “Live your life here and now : hold your wife close, go with your friends to drink a mug of beer, take your child by the hand. This is your lot in life ; seek no more !” the sage told him, in essence. Armed with this advice, Gilgamesh returned home, where he would be remembered as a wise and moderate king.
The Choice of Indecency
11§ Another existential attitude would be to adopt behaviour that is indifferent to considerations of honour and decency. One seeks to satisfy one’s unbridled desires, being prepared to trample on all that is respectable and to mistreat the weak. ‘Let us drink and eat, for tomorrow we die. Let us do so to the point of sickening ourselves, and so be it if someone starves to death somewhere because of us. Indeed, what have we to fear, since there is no judgement at the end anyway and only nothingness awaits us ?’ ”
Between resignation and denial
Resignation
12§ For those who believe that life ends after death, it is inconceivable that we might in any way be reunited with those we loved and whom death has taken from us ; the happy times spent with them belong solely to the past, and it is no longer possible to clear up misunderstandings or to seek or grant forgiveness with those who have left us for ever. Sadness remains, whatever existential choice one may have made.
13§ For those who have chosen decency and dignity, sadness will also be fuelled by the sight of injustice done to the weak. Robbed by the powerful, they die without their rightful claim to happiness having been respected, whilst, as the psalmist says, the wicked strut about flaunting their wealth and power. The temptation, then, is to despair in the face of a world governed by overwhelming and unjust forces against which the individual feels powerless.
Denial
14§ Since there is no transcendent force in which to place one’s hope, the secularised human being may seek an escape in the manipulation of the forces of the invisible world – this takes the form of magic, the belief that one can influence spirits through rituals and words – or the forces of the visible world – such as advances in medical, biological and computer technology, from which we expect solutions to all our misfortunes and perhaps even, one day, immortality.
The joy of believing in God and the responsibility that goes with it
15§ Personally, I have experienced this world from within – a world without transcendence, without God – and I can testify that it prevents the expression of the vertical dimension – in the sense of both height and depth – which, I believe, is an essential part of being human ; and that it is a sad and flat world, devoid of genuine joy.
16§ Believing in the existence of a God who cares for every single inhabitant of his Creation, who does not accept that death and evil should have the final say, and who will always triumph over them, gives a hope that brings happiness to those who believe in him. And it also gives them the responsibility to bear witness to this to those who do not yet share in this happiness.

目次
