Table des matières de la seconde partie [1]

Contents of Part Two [9]

  • 1. God finds his joy in his creation
  • 2. God finds his joy in Mary
  • 3. God finds his joy in us
  • Conclusion : ‘Enter into your master’s joy’

    1. God finds his joy in his creation

In the first account of creation (Gen. 1), God brings his creation into being over six days, and at the end of each of the first five days, he says : “It is good”.
For me, God is filled with joy at that moment.
    Analogy with the artist
It is a bit like an artist : the artist has an idea for a painting, a piece of music or a sculpture. They work to bring that idea to life, and once they have finished it, they look at it and marvel : “Did I really make that ? Oh, it’s marvellous.”
The artist looks at their work, which brings their inner idea to life and now stands before them. It will henceforth stand on its own two feet and slip from their grasp, but they rejoice at having brought it into being, at having given it to the world [10].
On the sixth day, something new happens : after creating the land animals, God creates human beings, man and woman, and blesses them in a special way :

‘... rule over the earth. Subdue the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky and every creature that moves upon the earth !’
    Gen 1:28

With humankind, God has a steward to assist him in bringing to fruition the beauty and goodness inherent in creation.
God then rises to a higher level of joy : “It is very good,” he says for the first time.
Let us avoid a misinterpretation stemming from our anthropocentrism : God is not referring here to humankind alone, but to the whole of creation—with humankind, admittedly, at the pinnacle—yet it is the total outcome of the six-day creative process that is very good
    Analogy with the Romanesque vault
Let us take the analogy of a Romanesque vault.

    Image from Morburre

The keystone is the finest stone in the vault ; it sits at the very top of the vault, is finely carved, and its central position means it holds the two arches of the vault together. But whilst it dominates, it is still just one of the voussoirs in the vault – certainly the finest, but a voussoir nonetheless. It is indispensable, but so are all the other voussoirs : should even one of them be missing, the vault will eventually collapse.
And it is the whole set of voussoirs that makes up the vault. Similarly, in creation, animals, plants, water, earth and air all contribute to the whole, and human beings are united with them, with their own specific role of ruling over the whole and managing it – knowing that they will have to give an account of their stewardship to the true owner, God.
10§ Adam and Eve ruined God’s original plan by wanting to become like God without Him and in defiance of Him. They listened to the serpent, who portrayed God as a liar and a jealous being : ‘God is jealous of his divinity ; he wants you to remain his servants and does not want you to become like him, so he has lied to you about the fruit of the tree of knowledge : this fruit does not bring death, as God claims, merely to frighten you.’
11§ The first couple trusted the serpent more than they trusted God, and they took the forbidden fruit whilst God was elsewhere, thereby derailing his plan.
God, however, is not resigned to writing off his creation as a total loss ; his words : ‘It is very good’, was not spoken in vain [11]. Our faith assures us of this : evil, demons and Satan’s minions rage, howl, scream, roll about on the ground and smash everything to pieces. But in the end, they will lose. And they have already lost in Jesus Christ. The final word does not belong to them ; it belongs to God, to life, to happiness, to goodness, to beauty.

    2. God finds his joy in Mary

12§ Mary stands at the junction of two desires : that of creation and that of God.
13§ Because of Adam and Eve’s act of defiance, the antelope fears the lion, and the lion fears hunger for itself and its young. Animals live in a world marked by fear and violence : ‘eat or be eaten’. Human beings, for their part, attempt to civilise the world, but violence is never far away, and when human beings behave like beasts, they are worse than beasts : Corruptio optimi pessima, the corruption of the best [human beings] brings forth the worst.
14§ Thus creation as a whole—humanity, animals, plants, the earth, the sky, the air and water—yearns to regain the original order intended by God, and above all it yearns for the joy of hearing him say once more : ‘It is very good’.
And God, for his part, longs for his creation to regain its original integrity, to return to the right path he had planned.
15§ The history of humanity can be read as the story of these two longings seeking one another. First appears the Jewish people, who bear the banner of monotheism, even though this brings them persecution from their polytheistic neighbours. This people awaits the Messiah, God’s plenipotentiary, who will establish the Kingdom of God on earth.
34§ Next, from within this people, a young girl appears—Mary—who represents the very pinnacle of what creation can produce.
16§ And God, for His part, will prepare this young girl. As a member of the Rosary group said, God cannot place His Son in an impure vessel. God chooses the most beautiful vessel and purifies it so that it may contain His Son : here we find the mystery of the Immaculate Conception.
17§ Mary was conceived without sin so that she might be able to welcome the Son into her womb and, before that, so that she might be able to say ‘Yes’ to God whilst remaining humble.
18§ What joy God must have felt at the Fiat – ‘Let it be so’ – of the Virgin Mary ! Joy for God, and joy for the whole of creation, both the visible and the invisible world. The symbolism of the wedding is evident here : the wedding of God and creation in, through and under the wedding of Christ and the Church, with the joy that accompanies them.

    3. God places his joy within us

19§ We begin with the following verse from the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John :

“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.” [12]

20§ The apostles knew the joy of being admitted into Jesus’ inner circle ; they benefited from the teaching of the Master who had the words of eternal life, they experienced his life-giving power that healed and lifted people up [13].
21§ But they were called to experience a greater joy, an invincible joy, one that no creature can take away :

The seventy-two disciples returned rejoicing, saying, ‘Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name.’ Jesus said to them : ‘I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning. Behold, I have given you the power to trample underfoot serpents and scorpions, and all the power of the enemy, and nothing will be able to harm you. Yet do not rejoice that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.
    Luke 10:17–20

22§ Jesus sent thirty-six pairs of disciples ahead of him to prepare the way for his arrival in the towns and villages. The disciples received from him powers of healing and exorcism, which they exercised successfully [14].
23§ The disciples rejoice at having the upper hand over the enemy of God and His creation, but Jesus offers them a higher joy, a positive joy : God has admitted them into His service ; they are called to enter the Kingdom of God and to live eternally in His presence.

Conclusion : ‘Share in your master’s joy’

24§ The parable of the talents offers an unexpected twist : ‘Share in your master’s joy,’ says the master to his faithful servants [15]. It is no longer God who places his joy within us, but we who enter into his joy ; and our limited joy then takes on cosmic, if not divine, dimensions.
25§ We too, since our baptism, have been in God’s service, and He has entrusted talents to us as well. These talents hold within them a power of life, of purification and of renewal which we are called to bring to bear in the world.
26§ The lay apostolic movement of the Rosary Teams contributes to this work of bringing forth the Kingdom of God on earth [16].
28§ Like the apostles at Pentecost, the members of the Rosary Teams meet in private homes every month, but they leave these gatherings full of joy, filled with the Holy Spirit who impels them to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the whole world.
29§ They put to good use the gifts received at baptism, nourished and strengthened by their involvement in the Teams amongst other things, and it is a source of joy to progress together on the path of life with God, in the company of the Virgin Mary.
30§ Another source of joy is seeing that this joint work within the Équipes bears fruit in the wider world ; for example, when their presence fosters peace and reconciliation in situations of tension, or when their communal prayer has helped someone to cope with a difficulty.
31§ My friends, this joy will be multiplied a thousandfold at the general resurrection : in the parable of the talents in Luke, the king tells the faithful servant that what was entrusted to him – the ten talents – is nothing compared to what he is now to receive : cities.
32§ To echo the words of Thomas Aquinas, we shall rest in the enjoyment of a good that is utterly disproportionate to our present good.

‘Enter into the joy of your master’.

Morburre

[10A mother no doubt feels a similar joy after giving birth to her newborn

[11See Isaiah :

For just as the rain or snow comes down from heaven, and does not return there without having saturated the earth, without having caused it to bring forth and sprout, without having given seed to the sower and food to the eater, so shall my word be from the moment it leaves my mouth : it shall not return to me empty, but shall accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:10–11)

[12John chapter 15, verse 11

[13You must have met extraordinary people, full of kindness and human warmth. In their presence, you feel like a better person. “I’ve done some foolish things, but alongside him, alongside her, I feel that I can be more than my foolishness, that I can become more beautiful, more good – a better person.” Jesus must have radiated this kind of aura in an exceptional, unique way

[14Every disciple of Christ, and not just the apostles, works in their own way towards the ‘great exorcism’ carried out by Christ – an expression used by the late Pope Benedict XVI in his book ‘Jesus of Nazareth

[16We are not all Mother Teresa or Saint Paul : whatever we have been given, our sole duty towards God is to make it bear fruit. In return, sharing in our Master’s joy will be more than enough for us, and we shall have absolutely no envy of our neighbour ; on the contrary, their joy will be our joy, just as ours will be theirs.
27§ Saint Paul, too, considers that God bestows his grace proportionately. In his Letter to the Romans, he asks them to regard themselves ‘each according to the measure of faith God has given them’ and to exercise their gifts ‘in proportion to our faith’ (12:3, 6).
