From the Treatise on the Nine Ways of Praying by Saint Dominic
His first way of praying was as follows. Humbly prostrate before the altar, as though Christ, represented by that altar, were truly and personally present to him, and not merely in symbol, he would say : ‘My God, you have always found the prayers of humble and meek people pleasing. Was it not through her humility that the Canaanite woman obtained what she desired, just as the Prodigal Son did ? But I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, for I have humbled myself deeply before you, Lord.’
Having prayed in this way, the blessed Father would rise, bow his head and, humbly contemplating his Lord Jesus Christ, comparing his condition as a slave with the excellence of Christ, he would devote his whole being to showing him his veneration. And he taught the brothers to do the same when they passed before the crucifix, the sign of the humiliation of Jesus Christ, so that, having humbled himself so deeply for our sake, he might also see us humbled before his majesty. He also sought this kind of humility in honour of the Holy Trinity, when the verse was sung : ‘Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.’
Whether before the altar or in chapter, Saint Dominic, his gaze fixed on the crucifix, would contemplate it with incomparable veneration. Before it he would make numerous genuflections. Sometimes, too, from Compline until the middle of the night, he would alternately rise and kneel, just like the Apostle Saint James. Following the example of the leper in the Gospel, he would say, with his knee on the ground : ‘Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.’ Still on his knees, like Saint Stephen, he would cry out with great fervour : ‘Do not hold this sin against them, Lord.’ A deep sense of trust in God’s mercy then took root in our Father Saint Dominic : for himself, for all sinners, and for the protection of the younger brothers whom he sent out into the world to preach. At times, he could not contain his voice, and the brothers would hear him cry out : ‘It is to you that I cry out, Lord ; do not fail to answer me ; do not remain silent’, or other similar words from Holy Scripture.
But at other times he would speak in his heart, and his voice could no longer be heard at all. He would sometimes remain kneeling for a very long time, his soul lost in rapture. And at times it seemed that, in this kind of contemplation, his mind penetrated the heavens ; and immediately, filled with joy, he would wipe away the tears streaming from his eyes. He would be carried away by a holy longing, like a thirsty man who reaches a spring, like a traveller who is at last returning to his homeland.
His liveliness and fervour grew, as could be seen from the swiftness of his movements—which nevertheless retained all their dignity—when he rose and knelt again. He was so accustomed to kneeling that, even whilst travelling, in inns after the hardships of the road and even by the wayside, whilst his companions slept and rested, he would return to his genuflections as if they were his particular craft and ministry. And by his example rather than by his words, he taught his brothers to pray.
