| ‘As for you, do not call anyone “teacher”, for you have only one Teacher, and you are all brothers.’ |
| In today’s Gospel [3], Jesus uses the word ‘master’ not in the sense of a school or university teacher, but in the sense of a master of life, in German Lebensmeister. |
| It is a matter of teaching people to live well, to live in true happiness : nothing less than doing God’s will and passing from the order of the created to the order of the uncreated. |
[5] | Jesus does not tell us how the heavens work – astronomy is a matter for human knowledge – but how one goes to heaven – and this, only God can teach us [6] |
| And human beings cannot access this teaching for two reasons : as creatures, they cannot, of their own accord, enter the order of the Creator – the impediment here is ontological, essential. Moreover, as a creature marred by the stain of sin, they are incapable of responding fully to God’s love – the impediment here is moral and linked to original sin. Only Christ can grant us access to the divine dimension through his human words, taken up and brought to life by the Holy Spirit. |
| I refer to Saint Bonaventure in his Journey of the Soul towards God, published in 1259. |

| I wholeheartedly agree with the Franciscan friar Bonaventure, a son of the Order of St Francis of Assisi : to expect from a mere mortal that which belongs to immortality, or to expect from the created that which belongs to the uncreated, has a name in the Bible—it is called idolatry. Only God speaks truly of God. |
| At the same time, as a son of the Order of St Dominic, I value reason and its human products, provided it recognises its limits. Whilst human teaching is not capable of bringing us into divine reality, it is nevertheless useful in showing us the way, in pointing towards divine reality. |
| Here I offer you a short fable inspired by Eastern wisdom. People marvelled at seeing, reflected in puddles, ponds and seas, a luminous body shining in the night. One day, one of them—for reasons unknown—looked up and saw in the sky a point of light, a very bright one : it was the moon. He realised that everything he had been seeing in the water was merely a reflection of that luminous celestial body. |
| And he wanted to share his discovery with his companions, who, with their heads bowed, were marvelling at all those luminous reflections : he pointed at the moon with his finger. |
| Some thought to themselves : ‘What on earth is got into him ? Has he got a cramp in his arm ?’ Others looked at his finger, raised their heads to see what he was pointing at, and they too saw the moon. |
| For me, a human being who has experienced God can use human words to enable other human beings to encounter God too. Their knowledge expresses their experience, but it is not the experience itself ; it acts merely as a pointing finger. Pointing upwards. Towards another dimension. |
